Memory foam mattresses question

Post by geoDoug » Thu Aug 23, 2007 3:43 pm

For you folks who have memory foam mattresses (as opposed to a topper)...

If you don't mind me asking, is there a significant weight difference between you and your bed partner? Does a foam mattress compensate for this? My wife and I may be shopping for a mattress soon. I've been thinking about a sleep number bed so we can customize the support. I'm curious to know if memory foam mattresses have a similar effect.

Doug.

I have a New Englander version mattress of memory foam. WE have had it 8 months and like it pretty well. It does seem to be a little on the warm side for summer anyway. I slept fine on it even after using a full flotation waterbed for 25 years since using a regular mattress

goeDoug My wife is a fair amount smaller then me probably 40 lbs and it doesn't seem to me like she has any troubles. The mattress comes back to normal after we get out then we each kind of sink into our own area each night.

My wife and I have been considering the Tempur-pedic for some time. It seems the longer we wait, the better the offers get! Just yesterday, we received a letter in the mail offering free shipping, two free pillows and no payments or interest until 2009.

My sleep study was done on a Temur-pedic "classic", and I liked it.

The sleep number bed looks interesting, however, with so many settings to choose from, I'm not sure I would like that. As it stands now, I am constantly debating my 3 A-Flex settings, so more "choice" is not something I need!

I saw an add on TV for a "memory foam" mattress for $399.99. My wife said it was probably "short term memory foam".....lol

It was suggested to include a ceiling fan with the purchase.....that is one way to stay cool!

I have tried several types of beds but have found the couch the best sleeper I have ever tried. Of course I am married and no my wife does not sleep with me on the couch. If I plan on living a healthy life, I have to do what I have to do.

Being a hot natured gal the memory foam did not work for me. i can't stand being to warm at night. I ended up giving the topper i bought away.
I do have the sleep number now and I do like it.
With the sleep number if I get up in the middle of the night my hubby's side doesn 't even move so he never knows it and vice versa.

I have a tempurpedic deluxe and enjoy it. It's never gotten too hot only here in Northern New England, winter nights get cold enough that I pre-warm the mattress on very low heat setting to it isn't a block of cement, lol!

I also have a "supreme" sleep number bed (has both memory foam and zone foam toppers) and I especially love that one.

Hi Doug,

I'm 40-50 pounds heavier than my wife. If one of us is asleep and the other gets in or out of bed, it does not disturb the one who's sleeping. You could probably drop a bowling ball on one side of the bed without disturbing the other side.

Sounds like the sleep# beds are worth checking out. (I used to have a crush on Lindsey Wagner when she was the bionic woman.) (That was off the topic, btw )

Good luck!

Funny this just got posted.... I just purchased a memory foam mattress with a S-cape adjustable bed.

I have found it is helping me sleep better:)

Couldn't say if it is the memory foam and/or the adjustable bed(I am now sleep on a slight incline) but I do have less conjestion.

This thing is FANTASIC to watch TV though:)

I've heard that some people just don't like the memory foam mattresses. I wasn't sure I liked mine for the first several weeks but then settled in and am now happy with it.

Perhaps it's a bit like face masks ... one kind doesn't suit everyone

tempur-pedic

Post by samofny » Fri Aug 24, 2007 9:57 am

I've had the classic Tempur-Pedic for a year and am never going back to springs. It's a pleasure to sleep on. I do have to use a thick mattress cover in the summer because of the heat retention properties of the memory foam. This takes a little away from the effects of the memory foam, but the comfort factor doesn't change much. I remove the cover in the winter.

I've tried the store brand and other knockoffs and found a difference. I prefer the Tempur-Pedic and it was well worth the price. I think the warranty is 20 years. The foam is also hypoallergenic, and doesn't conduct movement that can disturb your partner. You also don't need a box spring if you have a platform bed.

My friend has a Dormia and he's happy with it. They're a little cheaper than the Tempur-Pedic.

I would prefer a waterbed but there is no way that I could make it work with a mask.
I just want to go back to sleep!

I too have been looking for a new bed set. Gave the sleep number some thought, two night trail and talking with two different mfgs. of mattresses I have decided against the sleep number. Thought about the tempurpedic and the first thing that entered my mind was hot, need something else. While in Cleveland this week I saw a mattress shop and just strolled in telling the owner what I had trialed and what I was looking for, something to also stop back pain and was not hot. Owner says, "go over there and try the "Dormia" mattress. My goodness, to keep it short, for me it was very comfortable and very cool, layed on it for about 20mins and did not feel any heat. I really got comfortable when the owner came by and used the remote control which adjusted the head and feet. I will buy the bed when I find a local supplier, and I find a job for my wife. King Size mattress and foundation $3000.00 add the adjustable foundation $5000.00. There is also a "Dormia" pillow, I can buy that now $159.00 but couldn't get it into my "carry-on". http://www.dormia.com.

Oh, this is a latex bed with bamboo covering and 25 yr non prorated warranty.

Best regards,

Fred

Will try it tonight.
Will keep you posted.
After keeping it opened in a basement for three days for “detoxification” (the initial smell was bad) I have finally set it and tried it…. For 15 minutes, and have stopped my testing.
It felt like it actually had a heater in it. It literally creates some burning effect. It is absolutely unbearable. It is going back to Costco tomorrow.

Interesting. I've been thinking of upgrading to a new bed, and I've wondered about the memory foam/Tempurpedic mattresses.

I have a memory foam mattress topper and I love it. It's so comfortable. But I think it's time for a new mattress anyway, because every day I wake up with my neck and the back of my head in terrible pain like I've slept in a weird position or something.

Anyway, good info.

Tempur-Pedic

Post by Arizona-Willie » Tue Aug 28, 2007 8:19 am

We've had our Tempur-Pedic for about a year now and we love it.

Da Boss could be eating ice cream nude sitting on an Alaskan glacier in January and she would complain she was hot.

But, no one ever told her these mattresses were hot, so she has never had a problem with heat!!! She sleeps all night and has never complained about being hot ... and we live in Arizona.

I think the hot factor is all in the mind. Certainly not a problem with ours.
