Rested Gal's Pantyhose
I knew that would get your attention.
Rested Gal, I've been a long-term mouth taper because I just get way better numbers with a nasal mask than with a full-face. I'd pretty much resigned myself to keeping 3M stock at a high level for the rest of my life.
But then I read your post regarding your pantyhose tights chinstrap a few days ago and decided to give it a try. My lovely bride was kind enough to venture into no-man's land at Wal*Mart to bring out a pair for me and I tried it for the first time last night.
Believe it or not, I got the lowest AHI (1.4) that I've had in more than a year of hose huffing. There were a number of leaks recorded throughout the night, but not that many more than is typical for me, and certainly lower than with a full-face mask. The downside is that my head looked sorta like a bowling ball in a catapult sling, but what's one more indignity under CPAP?
Of course one night doesn't really mean success, but I'm starting to have just a glimmer of hope that perhaps someday, as I wean myself away from the nice folks who make 3M Micropore, I may eventually be able to just use a nasal mask without any other gadgets to make it work.
Thanks a bunch!

You're a lucky man. But you already know that.OwlCreekObserver wrote:My lovely bride was kind enough to venture into no-man's land at Wal*Mart to bring out a pair for me

ROTFL!!OwlCreekObserver wrote:The downside is that my head looked sorta like a bowling ball in a catapult sling
Indeed. *snicker*OwlCreekObserver wrote:but what's one more indignity under CPAP?
Right. I keep waiting for the bubble to burst... but so far, so good. Hope "the sling" keeps working ok for you, too.OwlCreekObserver wrote:Of course one night doesn't really mean success
I shall cross my fingers for you. I'll even tape them crossed each night!OwlCreekObserver wrote:but I'm starting to have just a glimmer of hope that perhaps someday, as I wean myself away from the nice folks who make 3M Micropore, I may eventually be able to just use a nasal mask without any other gadgets to make it work.
You're welcome. But the person to really thank is blarg. It was his discovery that after failing with chin straps, and having to tape for a number of months, he was finally able to get a chin strap to work. I think blarg uses a commercial chin strap; but anyway, his success prompted me to see if the time had maybe finally come for a sling of some kind to work for me, too.OwlCreekObserver wrote:Thanks a bunch!

I didn't expect it to work. Chin straps I'd tried in the past sure hadn't. But like you, I was pleasantly surprised at seeing as low a leak rate as I'd ever seen with tape. And with no more brief breakthroughs than I'd had when tape worked loose at an edge on some nights.
Good luck, OCO!

Well, thanks also to blarg. I'd tried a basic chinstrap several months ago but it just didn't work at all. Nice to hear that some commercial ones actually do work!rested gal wrote:You're welcome. panty hose
Maybe they should be called sleep tights.
To all of us who sleep "tight" , may the bugs not bite!

Well, now I will have to try the hose chinstrap too! I tried taping early on but it didn't work for me. Got a chinstrap from the DME that was worthless. I have been using a chinstrap made from Ace Bandage ever since, and it has worked well. The hose would probably be cooler this time of the year though.
I'm glad it is working for you, OCO.

OK, the British (honestly) have a Most Nobel Order of the Garter.
(Whose motto happens to be: Honi soit qui mal y pense = shame upon him who thinks evil of it)
"The Order is the highest English Order of Chivalry and is one of the most important of all such Orders throughout the world".
We should set up the Most Nobel Order of the Pantyhose.
The highest Order of cpapry, and the most important of all such Orders throughout the world.

British
I wonder why the British motto is not in English?

When the Order of the Garter was established (1348) the English nobility spoke Old French...Catnapper wrote:I wonder why the British motto is not in English?

O.King Edward III (r. 1327-1377) instituted the Most Noble Order of the Garter in 1348. He and the Black Prince (Edward's eldest son and Prince of Wales) were the first members of the Order, which is now over 650 years old. It is symbolised by a blue garter. The garter supposedly had its origins at a ball in northern France, attended by the king and a certain Joan, Countess of Salisbury.
The story goes that the Countess dropped her garter, causing much mirth and embarrassment, whereby the king, in a great act of chivalry, picked it up, bound it round his own leg, and uttered the immortal phrase 'Honi Soit Qui Mal Y Pense', now the motto of the order, and which, translated, means 'Evil be unto him who thinks evil'.

Countess Joan
Countess Joan? I have dropped a garter or two myself. She could be my ancestor!

Help! I need some visuals of the Famous Rested Gal PantyHose Chinstrap Method.
I'm not getting it... And Jerry tells me my card is telling him that I am leaking. And I know my latest chinstrap mod, while it worked great ONE NIGHT, didn't work great the next night...
Pix? Anyone? Links to pix will work...
Many thanks!

I currently have a stash of Nasal Aire II cannulas in Small or Extra Small. Please PM me if you would like them. I'm interested in bartering for something strange and wonderful that I don't currently own. Or a Large size NAII cannula.

Babs.......
I can't point you to any pictures....but I can tell you how I use RG's panty-hose tights.
Take one leg and sew (or hot glue) it into a loop....that goes around your head at mouth level.
Take the second leg and sew (or hot glue) it to the first loop just ahead of your LH ear......bring it up over the top of your head (towards the back)....and down to the RH side just ahead of your RH ear......sew (or hot glue) there.
I use 3M Blue "Delicate Release" painter's masking tape 2" wide to cover my mouth at night. Tape is available at low cost from Lowe's. I think it's better than "Micropore"......and its' a heck of a lot less expensive.
After installing the mouth covering blue tape, I overlay the tape with the panty-hose tights rig. This puts a slight pressure on the tape....adding to its delicate adhesive.....to prevent blow-outs.
Thanks to Rested Gal (Mother Superior of the CPAP Underground)!

I, too, wear a homemade tights chinstrap. I wore it for about a month, and then tried it without it, and I had apparently learned to keep my mouth closed! I've gone without it for several months and kept a low leak rate.. But lately, my leak rate is going up again, so its back on with the chinstrap. I think we learn to subconsciously keep our mouths closed, after they get reminded for awhile with the chinstrap.
I just made the tights go around my chin and head, and then added a piece of elastic to go around the back of my head. Works great......except for the times the chin part ends up in my mouth!
