What does this all mean?

Post by Jody Kultgen » Wed Apr 06, 2005 2:12 am

Ok I've been using cpap for over a year now and I am a new addition to this little family here. I have some questions and hopefully someone will answer my questions so it will get easier for me to understand everyone else on this site. Plus I may be able to understand my own problem better.
what is the meaning of the following? cpap bipap osa and there are some other abbreviations I just can't remember them right now.

I wish this site had a comprehensive list of abbreviations. The User Encyclopedia is nice, but a plain old list of common abbreviations and acronyms would be one of the handiest things I can think of for new people.

Jody, you'll find a very good list of definitions if you click this link:

Definitions

I don't like that site's message board, but it does have an excellent list of common terms.

Overall, those are pretty good definitions, but I saw one boo-boo in grammer "is begins" instead of "is begun", and I'd like to see what normal values are on many of the terms. Like, what is the normal range of Sleep Latency? What is the normal time in REM, normal REM Latency. When you read a Sleep report you get all these numbers but no indication, quite often of what is normal, so you don't know how you compare.
Also, exactly what is a Sleep Latency Test testing FOR???? I had one supposedly to rule out Narcolepsy. I went to sleep in 30 seconds to 1 1/2 minutes on each of the four naps. All my doctor told me was hardly anyone actually slept during each nap. SO, WHAT DOES THAT MEAN????? Did it mean I just have a really bad case of Sleep Deficit or what? He didn't seem too concerned about it, at any rate.

I thiink we could swipe those (a little of the ole cut and paste) and improve on many of the definitions. Also, RG, did you notice there is no definition for RT or CRT (Respiratory Therapist and Certified Respiratory Therapist) That seems rather strange since that is a very commonly used abbreviation at least on this list.
