CPAP cures baldness
CPAP cures baldness
Does being tired and worn out from sleep apnea lead to baldness? My theory is the stress placed on the body leads to hair loss.
I guess you would have to be geneticly pre disposed to it but maybe it increases the rate at which it falls out?

Ooohh! Maybe my husband needs the CPAP more than I do!!
Seriously though, I do believe stress can attribute to hair loss, so SA that's gone untreated might very well cause more than age related hair loss.
I know I have had more than usual hair loss (not attributed to thyroid or any other problems) and I am just now treating my apnea I know I've had for years.......Interesting.....

I used to think it was due to smoking, or too much sodium, or cholesterol, or weight loss/gain, or drinking alcohol, or vegan diet, too much stress, too many children, riding a bike without a helmet, or watching too many horror movies, or…..andyomega wrote:Does being tired and worn out from sleep apnea lead to baldness? Interesting thought. In the few months before getting my diagnosis of SA, it seemed that I was losing more hair than usual when I would wash or brush it. I'm still waiting to start my treatment, but I'll have to see if I lose less hair once I start it.
Since lack of sleep and low oxygen has all kinds of negative effects on the body, I wouldn't be surprised if SA could contribute to hair loss. Just my speculation, I'm not a doctor or anything

Shucks, darn, I had the opposite problem. At age 78 I had lots of hair until I started CPAP. A few of the masks I have tried,( up to number 12 or so now I think ,) a few masks I tried with pads that sit on top of my head as well as a forehead pad rubbed the hair really thin to where I had a visible bald spot.
Does Rogain really work?????

I checked Pubmed http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/sites/entrez for alopecia (baldness http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baldness) and sleep apnea. and there doesn't seem to be any connection.andyomega wrote:Does being tired and worn out from sleep apnea lead to baldness? Does Sleep Apnea Cause Hair Loss?
I'm wondering if any correlation between sleep apnea and hair loss or thinning hair?
I know that I personally have experienced considerable hair loss (and I'm an otherwise healthy 34 year old female with no family history of thinning hair)in the past 3 years. I was diagnosed with severe sleep apnea about a year ago and have been successfully treated with CPAP since then. I have been distressed over my thinning hair (which probably doesn't help the situation) and trying to find out if there is a known link or any research in this area.
My hypothesis is that the cumulative effects of ongoing hypoxia from the sleep apnea lead to degenerative changes to the endothelial layers of the vessels in the scalp as well as reduce levels of Nitric Oxide (important in hair growth and regrowth) due to the compromised airway of apnea patients. It is known that the highest concentrations of Nitric Oxide reside in the nasopharynx of humans, so I think its plausible that the physical restriction of apnea may inhibit its ability to freely circulate in the bloodstream.
I was wondering if any sleep specialists who read this forum might have more information pertaining to the symptom of hair loss in sleep apnea patients?
