Puritan Bennett® 425 humidifier connection

Post by death1 » Mon Jul 16, 2007 11:18 am

I have a PB425. It worked pretty well the first week and a half. Then I'd wake up with almost no pressure in the morning. This morning I woke to a "ln 1" hose disconnected but it was tightly connected. I think the connector from the machine to the humidifier may be leaking, maybe grease in the connector or the humidifier detaches slightly(Have RLS, I run, kick, punch and a whole host on things in my sleep). I'm running 12E/15I. Could it be the higher pressures causing the leaks? Has anyone experienced this with the PB4xxxx models? Remedies? Ideas?

Do you mean you felt no pressure in the mornings, or do you mean the machine showed very low, or no pressure in the morining?

The machine will show "ln 1" when the small thin pressure sensing hose is not connected to it -- did you make sure that was connected to the machine?

The PB autoensing machines use special hoses:

You can see this sensor line clearly in the above photo - flowing elegantly above the word cpap. This it the machine side. PB autoensing machines have a small nipple that the sensor hose fits on to. Just to the left of the hose connection in the following picture.

If you don't connect the pressure sensor, the machine reacts at though there was no mask connected, and lowers the pressure.

The mask side of the hose is in the center of the hose picture.

If you have a major leak at the humidifier connection, you can feel it with your hand.

If you don't feel a leak, and the sensor hose is properly connected, return the machine to the supplier immediately, and demand another.

The last week or so when I woke up in the morning with the pressure very low. Its all connected correctly(i got my instruction). I'm using the correct hose and the small tube was still connected. I didn't notice the small hoses position it could have been loose. I try to keep everything disconnected during the day so I can check the connections every night. Today was the first time it displayed "ln 1" when I woke up.

Then I'ld take the machine back ASAP - this doesn't sound right at all.

There was one in the beginning night when I forgot to connect the sensor hose and slept all night without it - I had a terrible headache the next day.

And yes, PB did have some quality control problems. I had one machine that suddenly whirred down one night in a terrifying way after about a year of use- and I returned it. (The replacement had been working fine). Others have run into PB quality control problems too.

Thanks for the follow up. I'm giving it 1 more day. If it doesn't straighten up and fly right. I'm tired all over again.

I've used a PB420 (which is not a BiLevel) but have a PB330 & used it for 18 months until last week (now using a Resmed S8 Vantage with EPR).

With the PB330 it is easy to know when I bump the sensor line off (have done it occasionally) as the PB330 goes straight to 30+ CMS and I am left in no doubt about what has gone wrong

It must be funny for my wife on these occasions, to see my mask like a hovercraft on my flattened face

With the PB420 I can't recall what it did if the sensor line was off as I only used it for travel a few times before selling it to a friend who needed a light machine for a trip to Asia.

Good luck
