Calling slim people with OSA
Calling slim people with OSA
I would like to get you to post if you had a Body Mass Index of 24 or less when you were diagnosed with OSA. There is a BMI calculator at http://www.nhlbisupport.com/bmi/. BMIs of 24 or less are considered healthy. (Yeah, I know if your BMI is 12, it ain't healthy.)
If there are any complications or interesting stories tell us.
I will start.
When I was diagnosed my BMI was 24. Due to improvements from cpap, energy to exercise more and reductions of cravings for crunchy carbohydrates, my BMI has been reduced to 23.
If I had been overweight, maybe I would have been diagnosed 6 years sooner when I first started going to doctors.

I have a BMI of 22, I also have thyroid issues and I DO NOT snore.
ETA: Ive been on it over 2 months and lost 8lbs but not sure if its the mask or my thyroid since my energy levels have been erradic as well. Im one of those people whose weight never changes (except when Im preg) so it was weird for me to suddenly lose weight but as I said I have extenuating circumstances.

Hokay. I'm 5'4", weigh 117, my BMI is 20.1 and my neck circumference is 13". That's where I was at when I was titrated and started on CPAP in October 2006 and that's where I'm still at. No changes.

My BMI is 23 now but used to be around 20. I've likely had OSA all my life. It was way worse during pregnancy (when I also had pre-eclampsia also common in women with OSA). My problem is a small lower jaw and normal sized... ok large tongue. OSA is caused by lots of things. It is a symptom/syndrome which effects many other things.
Nothing cures insomnia like the realization that it's time to get up!

Cool thread, Rooster, very interesting! I don't qualify for posting though! I might have if I had been diagnosed when it actually started!

At the time, 45yrs, a TIA once a week for at least 6 months followed by 1 small stroke then another 6 weeks later (not much basal ganglia left). Can still walk, talk, skip rope and talk to the pope
No TIA's or strokes since going on CPAP over 6 years ago, only take lisinopril off and on to control hypertension and a daily 325mg Ecotrin.

Not slim but certainly not obese. BM! 28.2
"A BMI above 25 may raise your risk for health problems, like heart disease and diabetes. However, you are close to the optimal range and could reduce your BMI by making small changes. Adding a 15-minute walk each day and passing up a few desserts each week could lower your BMI.
BMI is an important risk factor to consider when managing your health. BMI measurements are most accurate when used to provide an estimate of body fat in sedentary adults."
