I have been sooooooo over this discussion since it started. Thank you for accepting the apology.

Anyone have any thoughts on what kind of doctor tells me that I can not under any circumstances take oral birth control again....then trys to prescribe it a year later because they think the diaphram is outdated and spermacide doesnt have a high effectiveness rate? Needless to say....I think he is an ass. (not my regular dr, just a gyno I picked of a list from my ins company.)

Can't resist adding that I have just learned that split-city comes from Australia (Sydney)

I did wonder when I saw the blunt straight & forthright comments (recognized the style ) but didn't think split_city related to any place I knew here in Aust so concluded he was from the US.

Anyway, what I see is another example of how the 'Aussie way' of interacting can cause culture clash. I never really saw much of the 'offense' in his remarks that some others did. I am trusting that all have learned from this interaction (just as I believe I finally have from some of my own past interactions ). We Aussies sometimes need to be less direct.

(wanted to add what a delight it was to see the parties work this out & exchange pleasant finalities. Another good lesson.)

Are you working in Sinney mate ?

I was a guinea pig for Woolcock 2 years ago - they did a 100 person study 50 were given cpap educ & 50 weren't then they published the data last month.
The story made it to most state newspapers - here it was the SMH.

PS Once lived in Adelaide. Loved the annual trek to Oakbank to watch the GGs - also lwhile there earned what wine was & why it was preferred to Adelaide water. They tell me the Murry muck is better in recent years.

Nah, I'm in Adelaide. I might be going to Sydney to do some post-doc work though

Do you know if that study was called the SMOSA trial? Simplified Management Of Sleep Apnea?

Adelaide is just one big country town...but we definately have the best wine in Australia!

The Murray? Hhhmmm...yes, it's still pretty bad. The problem really is the quality but more the quantity! Droughts are killers!

When I 1st went there(1973), stayed in Henley Beach in a house rented out by a doctor .

While trying to run a bath for the kids (had 5 little ones back then) - with 2" of water in it, I couldn't see the bottom of the bath through it.

I rang the doc & asked if he had just had the plumbing worked on. His bemused reply was, "Is this your 1st stay in Adelaide ?", 'yes' I said. Well says he, "I don't quite know how to explain this" ... etc: etc:

It seems we were there at the end of the rainy season & back then the water was direct from the Murray. It smelled, it was full of minerals, it was as dark as brown Windsor soup & had very fine fine powder (mud) in it. Later when I bought a house 1st thing we got fitted was a softener & a charcoal filter & even after that the water was still like soup. Hence my lifelong taste for fine wine (that started that year)

Also until that water episode, we used to think it was so quaint that nearly all the houses in the city had big rainwater tanks. Back in Sinney, they had long dissapeared (before the 2nd WW IIRC ). I then understood that they were *essential* in Adelaide.

If people washed their white shirts or hair, they used rainwater or like some of us business folk, took shirts on trips to other cities & had them laundered there to get the color back

the next 20 years as I am the only one of her kids that can remotely afford to do so. On anther topic.....if your hubby has any hottie phd friends I would be glad to say hello. lol
Wow, that is something else. Has she ever had psych help of any kind? This is a joke: maybe you should commit her. Remember a joke, if you were here I'd be smiling and poking you!

Of course he has hottie PhD friends. Alas, you are 2000 miles away and I think Indiana would be a little bit of culture shock for someone who grew up in CA. In fact I know it would. One of the members of my mom's group recently moved here from CA and she is frequently overwhelmed by the LACK. Too funny what you get used to!

You must have an awesome job, good for you!

The pissing contest that I know of is two guys on a pier over a lake. The first one says "Water sure is cold". Other guy responds, "Deep too".

lol jen. My sister moved to kentucky and then ohio a few years ago. She was calling everyday to tell us some new thing. It was a bit funny to hear her adjust to the move. She came back here after her divorce. Now she tells us that people in CA are the rudest of anywhere she has lived and she wants to go back.

We have rude people here too. But of all of my travels the friendliest people I have met have been (in no particular order):

Minnesota
Wisconsin
Kentucky
North Carolina

Costa Rica

I'd really like to move to Minnesota, but doubt I'll be able to convince husband who wants to move to Fla.

Or the cold, or the ice, or the long dreary winter. You get the general idea. His fave season is summer.
