Thanks for the card reader fix!

Post by gasp » Tue Jul 10, 2007 11:47 am

[quote="lindychris"]I got it to work!! I would think XP would work the same as follows:

Click on run (or windows-key R) and type services.msc.

Scroll down to Smart Card. Right click it. Click properties and where it says start-up type, make it automatic.

Reboot (or click "start" and reboot on normal schedule)

Your reader will now work.

Good luck.

A quick explanation --
What lindychris has suggested is to access the system services application/tool.
The system services tool is where drivers etc. are located so when the system boots or a device requests a driver it knows where to find it. Also they are configured in the tool.
When a driver is installed it is placed into the system services tool and most of the time the startup is "automatic". For some reason the DT3500 driver comes up as a "manual" start (at least that's what it did on my system).

By using lindychris' proceedure you are modifying the properties of the driver. This can work for other drivers as well (scroll through the list if you're curious), but be warned, changing parameters should not be taken lightly -- it can mess up the driver, thus messing up the device/program that the driver supports.
Tread lightly.
This is a very simplistic explanation.........sorry.

Thanks again to lindychris -- Great Catch

cheers
gg

C'mon I beg to differ. Vista pretty much rocks. It's got a lot more secure infrastructure, and thanks to a smart kid, it's about to close a major vector of attack. Yes, it requires more ram and a graphics card to be sweet, but... what else you gonna spend the money on?

the bad thing, which is fully recognized, is the lousy applications compatibility experience. very, very bad. and msft and the applications developers deserve blame for that set of experiences.

Hello,

I have a Litronic Netsignia 210 Serial Card Reader. I have tried it on 2 seperate computers, one that has it on com 3, the other shows com 1.

I used rs232.exe to verify the port is working and the green light comes on, so I know the reader is good.

But, when I try using the software to download the card I get a brief green light, then nothing, then the can't communicate error that was described here.

Is there a specific type of reader that will work and nothing else ? I see there are drivers for USB and PCMCIA and they are installed, but I have a serial reader and not the MAKO one.

Do I need to buy a MAKO USB reader ? Where can I get one ?

Thanks

Bill

if your equipment is Respironics... you need a MAKO DT-3500. If it's Resmed, you'll need a different one (not sure what it is).

What kind of machine and software do you have?
Did you go into the software settings and tic Serial port instead of one of the others?

I have a respironics machine and the software is the pro version that goes with that machine.

It looks like the software needs the MAKO card reader, so I guess I just have to buy that DT3500.

It's a shame I can't use the Netsignia's I have. I bought 2 of them back in the 90's and they have been in a draw for years.

They still work, just not with this software.

Oh Well.

I'll let everyone know if I have trouble after I get the new reader.

Thanks

Bill

Ok, I realize this is an old thread. And maybe most of us don't use the mako card readers for the old encore pro software anymore. I don't really know as I'm so busy with 2 little kids, I don't have much time for this site anymore.

I'm having the card reader not detected problem again now. Only thing is, XP recognizes that the reader is there and knows what it is. The fix by lindychris above was undertaken, yet it was already listed as automatic. That seems to be in order. However Encore Pro does not "believe" the card reader is there.

I'm fairly computer illiterate and my memory is terrible. I don't even remember where I got the driver for the card reader to begin with, much less where I would go to reinstall. I'm trying to go through old posts, but I'm having trouble finding the fix for this, because discussions of this were years ago. Also, I've noticed when going through older posts that a lot of data has been lost! Places where people reply using a quote have their own reply deleted. This must have happened when cpaptalk changed its format a year or so ago. Some replies were lost. So, it is making this problem hard to track down (and I don't have a lot of time to do this!)

I don't check my data very often, but I am having a small issue and wanted to get an idea of what is happening. Any help will be trememdously appreciated.

give her a pm let us know if that give results.

I continued to search the forum after I posted--in fact I searched MY OWN POSTS (LOL) because I knew this had happened to me before and I came across the solution--which I had posted MYSELF back in 2007. My memory is terrible. And I'm only 38!

Anyway, if anyone needs this in the future, here is what I had to do to reinstall the driver and get it working again:

Go to control panel,
system,
hardware (or devices),
select: smart card reader

Then you might have to right click or double click (depending on your OS) and tell it to install the driver.

You must then make it browse to the cd drive where you will put in your installation disk for encore pro. Reinstall the driver and you are good to go.

@future me:
(OK, future Jen, quit being an idiot. When you posted this, you printed out these instructions and vowed to store them with the mako reader. You shouldn't have to go through all this for a simple fix.)

LOL.

Hi Jen!! I laughed so hard. I used to make notes to my future self when my memory was bad. I also used to write myself notes if I kept going to the wrong place in the house for something to direct me to the new location. : ))
