Bleeding eyes

Ok I am way new to this site so I hope I am doing this right. I have a severe problem. I keep bursting eye blood vessels. I have seen 3 different doctors and they all think it has to do with my cpap. I have been on Remstar with airflow of 10 and an O2 concentrater at 2liters for over a year. My life has never been better. Until recently, I keep bursting blood vessels and my eyes pool up with blood. I also have extreme asthma attacks everytime I wake up after using my mask. I have a nasal hose right now but am considering a full face mask. I would'nt dream of stopping my treatments, but I can't take this eye pain. It's very extreme. I wish I could post a picture. There is actual blood bubbles on my eyes.

Well, I had that problem before CPAP. My doctors weren't able to figure out why. After I got my apnea diagnosis and CPAP the problem went away. The doctors surmised that untreated apnea/hypopnea events caused excessive cardiovascular strain----enough to rupture vessels.

Wonder if you need to have your CPAP pressure verified? Or at least get your doc to write a script for overnight pulse oximetry to see if you are still desaturating at night.

The asthma problems might be because of humidity, you didn't mention if you are using a humidifier?

Could the burst blood vessels by the result of the extreme asthma attacks?
Are they as recent as the burst blood vessels? You mention you have been on CPAP for a year - what has changed in you environment recently?

ozij, I was wondering the same thing...wondering if the physical straining during the extreme asthma attacks was bursting blood vessels in the eyes.

Jody, you said you have a "water humidifier". Is it a heated humidifier? Does it have a way to turn heat adjustment up and down to make the water warm?

Jody, the "why" was because I wondered if you'd been given a cold water, passive humidifier instead of a heated one. I thought perhaps cold air blowing at you might be bringing on asthma attacks.

Of course, I guess one could also set a heated humidifier too warm. Everyone's mileage varies. I don't have asthma, but I did find that if I turn up my heated humidifier too much, I'll sometimes have a coughing fit during the night. Doesn't happen as long as I keep the heat turned down about halfway - or even a bit lower after I added the Aussie heated hose to the setup.

Greetings Jody,

I wanted add another possible solution. I have never heard of this specific problem(blood pooling), but have been asked or discussed air leakage coming out the eye before. So I wanted to add this for your consideration.

You may fall into a very small category where the air leaks out of your eyes. Sometimes the air pressure finds the path of least resistance, and doesn't stick to the air way. The solutionto consider is a Total Full Face Mask, seen at:

The idea behind this mask is the pressure will equalize since your eyes, mouth and nose are covered. This should prevent any leaking in the eye, mouth or nose, becuase of the equalized pressure blowing in. Same with a Full Face Mask except the pressure is equalized between your mouth and nose so if you had mouth leaks there would no longer be any issue.

I don't think the Full Face Mask will help since the air is leaking out your eye. Also, the Total Full Face Mask is very big and very cumbersome. I know it is a possible solution for treatment but you have to be committed to trying it and getting use to it. It may be hard but I think it will fix the air leak.
