Don't do this.

Post by LDuyer » Sat Apr 02, 2005 1:13 pm

I'm angry....at myself.
So I strongly recommend that none of you do what I did the last couple of nights --- sleep without your cpap. Not good.

Oh, I know it's been said here before, but I only want to vent.
Running on lack of sleep, I decided to go without on Thursday night. And I did the same Friday night. I WILL NOT DO THIS AGAIN...!

Typically lately I've been waking up once or twice nightly, waking to my bipap pressure. On Thursday night, when I went without it, I got about 5 hours of uninterrupted sleep. But I felt far more tired and groggy the next morning from 5 hours of sleep than I have on 3 or 4 hours of bipap interrupted sleep. Go figure!! And the morning after Friday's cheat was just as bad, but also worse, due to an excrutiating headache!!

So if anyone out there catches me trying to sneak in a non-cpap sleep -- stop me!!

Good luck getting IN my closet!
It's already bulging at the seams. So I don't think even your avatar would fit inside my closet. But help yourself!!

Wow. So the headache thing really is a thing, huh? I'd heard others mention the headache thing, but I'd never experienced it until now. Maybe it's God's way of telling us cpapers to not cheat!

I promise I'll be good! I promise I'll be good!

Hi Linda,

Did not quite understand how much sleep you normally get. Did you say only 3 to 4 hours a night?

Have been tracking my hours and it's pretty much 7 hr per night and now with the APAP it's almost uninterrupted. Have really been starting to feel better.

May have misunderstood you re the 3-4 hrs but if thats true ..... well it's hard to imagine; I could never make it. I was really having problems thus the sleep study so maybe I was in the same boat. Hope it works for you as it seems to be for me.

Just re-read this and not sure I'm making any sence. Have had a very hectic day. Anyway all the best and wear the mask!

Years ago I would never have believed anyone could keep going on just 2 to 3 hours sleep every night. But thats what I was doing for years till the Dr sent me for the sleep study. Took me a year on the machine and just started to get about 5 hours sleep most nights this past week. So, I am now getting a couple hours more sleep at night, but falling asleep sometimes in the middle of the day while on the computer. I never used to fall asleep early in the day before. Funny, the C-PAP is getting me more night sleep, but I`m feeling more tired now all day long. Today was the worst. Have to wonder if the rainy weather has anything to do with my tiredness today.

I agree, do not go without if you have earnestly started treatment. Last weekend I decided I did not want to hassle with it on Saturday night and told my husband I would sleep on the couch. Huge mistake! I woke up every hour on the hour and on Sunday I felt absolutely awful, like I had the Flu or something. I am going to try my hardest to always use my machine!

I found out this past Friday night something else I should not do - I took two Tylenol Nighttime Sinus 'cuz I thought I had congestion, well REALLY bad idea. Yesterday I had the worst case of Sleeping Pill hangover ever! I really am starting to believe all I need is CPAP. Last night was awesome! I had a good night and feel like a completely different person from yesterday. I guess we all have to go through trial and error and let me tell you, I have learned my lesson!

Now I am off to get my chores done I was not able to get done yesterday!

Later!!!!

I'm a youngster in this therapy. Some nites I'll try to wear the mask and it just doesn't want to let me breathe. I'll try my loaner nasal pillows and fight that for a while before giving up and taking off everything. I've been having better luck with my mask since I started using Flonase. My wife is amazed at me this weekend, i've worked really hard cleaning the garage, and today wrenching on my dune buggy project. I'm noticing that I'm not quite as grouchy if I get a few hours of good sleep with my CPAP. I hope that this will help to encourage others to try to make it work. Good luck, and keep sharing your successes and your problems.

Dot, if you aren't on an APAP it might be that your pressure is too low.

Headaches are usually caused by oxygen deprivation in those with Sleep Apnea and quite often will go away once you are up and about because you are getting more oxygen. Sometimes it will take about an hour or so.

Fewer hours with better results are because with CPAP you are getting fully oxygenated, healthier sleep without those mini-arousals you are getting with what you think are more hours of uninterrupted sleep.

I probably get about 5 hours a night in reality. I wake up at about 12:30 no matter what time I go to bed, and again about 2:30, then after about an hour go back to sleep until 5:40 when I get up.

Since the topic here is "Don't Do This!" I'll add another DON'T. Don't take Ambien and get up and walk or do anything an hour later. I took one at bedtime, laid there about an hour awake then my left leg started cramping. The only thing I've found to help this (I'd already taken 2 Ultracet for pain at bedtime), was to soak for about 15 minutes in the hot tub. So I did. Ambien makes me a bit unsteady, off balance (no Liam, I am not off-balance mentally!) and I was fine until I got out of the hot tub then on the second step I kind of just leaned to the right and ended up on the limestone floor of the screened in porch. Guess I was so "relaxed" I kind of just slumped down or something, but I have a doozy of a black eye now, all swollen up and purple. Went to ER and have no concussion or broken orbit or zygomatic process, thank goodness, but I was very sleep all day yesterday and took several naps. Tonight I can't sleep (ran out of Ambien samples) so here I am.

If you are all very very good, I'll change my Avatar to my passport photo I took with my digital camera for my passport renewal, so you can see what I look like without my mask on.

Please do post your picture, I wish more would, it hives a personal community type touch to the list.

While first taking Ambian, you will have the feeling of being drunk. Over time you will build an immunity to it and it won't. I can take two 10mg tabs now and it hardly even effects me in any way.

Okay, its now my avatar. But it IS 2 years old, and I might look a bit more tired since I was probably suffering from Sleep Apnea back then.
