The new ResMed Quattro full-face mask...any feedback??

Post by SleepTech » Sat Jun 30, 2007 3:33 pm

Hello all, I searched for a topic on these and didn't find one.

ResMed has released a new full-face mask back in May; the Quattro. I was using the Ultra Mirage and found that to be the best FF mask for myself as well as my patients, but still have issues with mask leaks.

As soon as the Quattro was released our ResMed rep offered one to me on trial and I fell in love with it the first night, I have since bought one. ResMed has been working on this mask for awhile, they continually get requests from everyone to come out with a full-face mask with that Active Cell technology like on the Activa nasal mask. Unfortunately the Quattro does not have the Active Cell technology, they call it Spring Air Cushion technology and I think they have significantly upped the ante for all future full-face masks. It has made a huge difference for my patients during jaw drop in REM as well as repositioning throughout the night. I've even had a patient maintain a good leak while he was prone with the mask, though I don't see many patients sleep prone with CPAP.

While ResMed still uses the double silicon around the Quattro mask they have eliminated the stiffer silicon by the chin and on the bridge of the nose, which I believe significantly reduces leaks in the more problematic areas. They also have changed the forehead brace from the standard pivot to an ingenious dial that has 24 different lengths to set for the forehead. I've found with my patients that I begin the study with the Ultra Mirage, once I switch them to the Quattro it is much less likely to leak and therefore is much more comfortable and should help to increase CPAP compliance.

I'm curious if anyone out there has had any comments, good or bad about the Quattro and if so what they are. I'm not looking for the standard "I don't like the size of full-face masks" comment either, I hear that enough at work...lol.

The only thing I've found is that the mask seems to be a little narrower by the bridge of the nose than the Ultra Mirage, but I haven't seen that to be a problem yet; though we've only been able to use it for a few months.

Thanks for your time.
Chris

A quick search for quatro topics gave these amoung others. You might get more if you search for posts instead of topics.Notice I spelled it with 1 T.

Thanks, that helped. When spelling it incorrectly with only 1 T, I got alot more results.

I too used the UMFF for years before trying the Quatro FFM. HUGE improvement. My AHI is at the lowest ever at around 2. Took some time to get the headgear right, but that seems to be true of any mask for me. Now that I have it right I just tweak the dial if I get any leaks and they stay gone. Great mask.

Will be trying my third quattro soon - the elbow leaks! My sleep tech said "it is normal", but IMHO - it's not!

Third time charm?

you are right it is not normal. Somewhere on the forum we had a discussion about the leaking elbow mine has never leaked and I have a newer lot # (found on the paper packed with the mask. And at least at that time 3 or 4 others had leaking elbows and theirs were older lots. based on a small sample we wondered if they found a mfg error and corrected it.. I have even bumped mine off the frame during the night and pushed it back on and no leaks have taken it apart 3 times now to clean and no leaks. so I think it is the lot number . If you do not find the lot number thread I can dig mine out and let you know that way when you go to the DME tell them you want a mask from that lot or newer.. Dunno might just be the fix..

I've been out of town for a week and might have missed out on some of this, but think I was in the original "lot" number post. My DME only has masks out of one lot and they sent my 1st one back.

I have heard nothing back, but am swapping a mask for a quattro from a forum member and since we are in different states, I'm sure it will be a different lot number - or I hope! I'll post when I get the mask next week and let you know if the new one leaks or hisses at me.

I work in a sleep lab and we allow patients to borrow masks to find what works best for them. As far as I have seen from experience ResMed makes the best masks hands down. The Quatro is by far the best of them all as far as full face masks go. I have yet to try the Quatro on a patient and it has not sealed well. It works great and is tolerated well by patients.

It's not that the mask is not sealing - it is a whistle/hissing sound from the swivel on the elbow. On mine, you can actually feel the air coming out and can stop the leak by simply putting your finger over the joint where the two meet.

My complaint is not a seal issue, but the hissing of the elbow swivel.

I have used a mirage activa for almost 2 years and get a great seal. But with the hissing sound on the quattro- it makes it difficult to determine if it is a leak or the stupid swivel hissing.

The Quattro would be a really nice mask if it wasn't for the leaking elbow joint. A little Teflon tape and the noise is gone, but it's a shame to have to repair a top-price mask right out of the box.

Hi,
After two years fighting with the ResMed FFM my doctor finally suggested that I borrow some different masks from the sleep center to try. The first one I tried was the new Liberty, which really worked well for me. The second one I tried was the Quarto (sp) and it worked well also. I tried about 7 other masks and none of them gave me the good results that the first two did. I had to wait until July 1 to get the Liberty because the insurance code for it wasn't ready yet. I think I will go with the Liberty and if it turns out to be not effective then my DME said that I could return it within 30 days and go for the Quarto.

I second that! But I'll have to wait for my new quattro before I try the teflon tape! Hoping another lot will not have the hissing elbow!

I had just gotten a brand new Nasal Aire II which is my third one. It WAS my favorite mask. My DME called and said for me to come and get this new mask and try it.

I have worn it every night since getting it approx 2 months ago.

I love it. Mean while, my new NA II gathers dust.

Stuck with Large

Post by rozenbob » Sun Jul 01, 2007 3:29 pm

I like the Quattro but my DME had ordered a Large and does not plan to stock it.
It was/is very comfortable...NO leaks around the elbow.
BUT I believe it is too large for my face since I have to wear it with my chin INSIDE the mask so that it does NOT cover my eyes!!
DME refuses to exchange for smaller size...so I am attempting to trade.
The number of AHI's seemed higher then my UMFF.
