Fun Question - Has anyone else faked an apnea event.......

Post by painterman » Sat Jun 23, 2007 10:38 am

I have an apap and when I first got it i was curious to see how long it took to change the pressure so I held my breath to see what the machine would do and watched the numbers. I was thinking how crazy this was and thought that only I would do something like that. Then I though "maybe not, there are a lot of other crazy hoseheads out there doing crazy things" By the way it works, the only problem is that you can't do to long of a test So am I the only one to do this???

Sorry, 1 month into my data reading therapy, and I'm still concentrating on getting my numbers as low as posssible. Pretty funny, though, thanks for the chuckle!

Yep, I did that too! I was just curious to see if it would work when I was asleep. It seemed to really take a long time to ramp up and respond though!

After I got the software I tried holding my breath, for several different durations, to see 1) how the machine responds and 2) what the data looks like for these events. My Dr isn't interested in the results so I do the collecting and do a summary for my Dr visits.

During my working life I was an engineer, so when I tell people that I do these things they say "what do you expect he's an engineer".

do it all the time, not consciously but I forget to breathe quite often, it is so annoying.
someday science will catch up to what I'm saying...

Guilty! And I'm not an engineer.

I do it all the time, but with BiPAP ST's, its more a check of when the Timed backup rate will kick in and how it will feel as it cycles from IPAP to EPAP and back & forth. Anytime I switched machines or anything had been changed on my machine, I did it so I would know if the Timed backup rate was set correctly as well as the Rise Time. I have to say the VPAP Adapt makes it very difficult to fake an event by holding your breath...it usually convinces me to breath while I'm still happily counting the seconds away, totally unaware I've taken a breath. I'm glad its that 'sneaky' at getting me to breath when I'm not, as it is much better then anything else at stabilizing my breathing and preventing central apneas & periodic breathing, at least for me.

No I haven't faked apneas, but I have faked breathing- I pretend to breath in a crowded room, but I'm really holding my breath, and people start to look at me funny as I'm turning blue, and eventually I pass our, and people say "He was such a fine person and a good breather" and then I come to, jump up, and everyone has a good laugh.

Seriously htough yeah- I fake apneas- to see what my machine will do- I'm on the Bipap S/T too but I'm not sure it kicks in with enough pressure ot start me breathign again.

It can also be fun to fake a few snores and watch how fast the pressure comes up.

I've faked lots of things, but never an apnea.

Thought about it, but haven't yet. I have, though, faked snoring and marked the time down to see if it showed up on my report! (It did.)

Haha cracks me up!

I just tried to stop 'breathing' with the mask off and blocking its airflow with my hand or on the pillow to see what the machine does.
