Waiting

Post by Indy » Wed Mar 30, 2005 1:28 pm

My doctor said that I have severe sleep apnea RDI 90.5 and blood H2O level at 74%. They ordered a CPAP and told me if I don' receive it in 6 weeks to call them. Is this normal a 6 week delivery time for a CPAP?

You should be able to get going with a machine and mask in a couple of days, particularly given the urgency of your numbers. I would call and rattle cages with the doc and the medical supplier, if I were you. The doc should recognize the urgency of your condition.

No it's not
I'd do more than rattle the cages, I'd rip the door off and stand in their office until I had satisfaction. How can they possibly justify a 6 week delay when on-line vendors can deliver in a day or two?

Indy? Are you from Indy? I am. I just got my machine about 2 weeks ago. I was scheduled to see my sleep doctor one week after he sent me to do a sleep study. They said it would be about a week to get a machine once they faxed the order to the DME. They had thought they had faxed this the week before, but they did it that day. OOPS. I was very anxious to start my CPAP. Lo and behold...the next day I had the DME at my door and started that night with the CPAP machine.

If you don't mind me asking, who do you see? And, where was your sleep study done?

I had my sleep study done 3 weeks ago at Carmel's St. Vincent Sleep Center, but I did meet with Dr. Mohan at the Indy St. V's initially. He had told me it would take up to 7 days once they faxed their order to the DME. Do we have the same doc?

Indy, check out cpap.com for two reasons:

1. Same day shipping
2. The cost of the equipment going through them may well be less than your deductible/copay going through insurance.

Just because you buy from Cpap.com
doesnt mean you wont get reimbursed from your insurance company but you do need to make sure you meet all of their requiriements .

No, 6 wks is like 6 mos. You need to get started on treatment to reduce these ap's, and take the suggestion ''rattle those in charge''. They forget they are working for YOU!! GOOD LUCK!!

Indy,

It seems to me your oxygen level is awfully low. Mine was too.
That's not good. I agree you should press for quicker delivery.

My guess is if medical professionals had those kind of numbers and were sufferers themselves, they'd find a way to have the equipment on their doorsteps within the hour!!! It's a shame sleep apnea doctors don't have OSA themselves.

Good luck!

the delay might be to give time to contact the insurance company and see what they will pay and if they will pay. I know this held mine up for quite a while and since my "numbers" weren't adequate, it was decided to get a titration study done, even though the Dr. was going to put me on autopap, to prove to the insurance I needed it and would benefit from it.

Indy, you poor s.o.b.-

I had CIGNA last year when I was diagnosed. Their service goes through Gentiva CareCentrix which will assign you the most basic of equipment (read old) possible. The service (equipment) provider was Rotech. If my experience repeats itself, you will be sent the equipment with a patient manual-i.e. -good luck!! They will send out an RT if they have to but won't do it on the front end when you need the help.

If you get anything out of this, read up on what you think you want from the various posts here. Then go to your doctor and insist on what you want prescribed and try to fight for it. Good luck!

Dan

PS-It also took forever.

With such a low oxygen saturation level, I expect that you would be prescribed a supplemental oxygen bleed into the cpap line from an oxygen concentrator, also provided through CIGNA/Gentiva. I suggest you check with your physician, then call Gentiva to have the prescription filled within days, not weeks. Call your doctor to check on those readings.

Good luck with your treatment! It can make a world of difference.
