Babette and geoDoug, unless I am doing a consulting job, I never wear a watch. I DO carry a pocket agenda (lil notebook/datebook thingie) that I keep note and appointments in. MUCH easier than scrolling endlessly through a Blackberry or PalmPilot to find, change or erase (oops!... delete) something. Tha'ts why the gods made erasers!

I do make use of computers, but technology was meant to serve man, not the other way around. Excuse me while I go recharge something.....

I currently have a stash of Nasal Aire II cannulas in Small or Extra Small. Please PM me if you would like them. I'm interested in bartering for something strange and wonderful that I don't currently own. Or a Large size NAII cannula. :)

Ringtones

Post by kteague » Sun Jun 10, 2007 9:52 pm

My first introduction to all this technology was about 8 years ago when a friend of my daughter sold me his computer. I got it all set up and familiarized myself with it, clicking on some sounds as he had turned all the sounds off, and setting up my desktop to my preference. Feeling accomplished, I turned it off and went to bed. The next morning while showering for work I remembered I intended to send a birthday e-card before leaving, but the computer needed to be turned on. Under the cover of darkness and thinking I was alone, I darted dripping down the hall and into the living room, pushed the ON button, and turned to run back to the bathroom. As I ran back I heard these words from the dark living room, "Oh my God Becky, look at her butt. It is sooo big!" Grabbing frantically for a towel, I went back down the hall and turned on the light, furious that my daughter had shown up with my friend Becky unannounced. But the room was empty. It took someone from that generation to later tell me that those words were from the intro to a song called "Baby Got Back." And I thought my secret had been revealed!

In the 1980's i was a nurse at Southbury Training School. I remember that it was Valentines day and they were having a dance for the clients. All the boys wore red felt vests and the girls had red felt skirts and were dancing with their parents and the staff. It was so moving to me to see all these people with Down's Syndrome dancing to Chris DeBarge singing Lady in Red. They were so happy and having such a good time and it made such a profound impression on me. Everytime I hear that song I remember that day and so I put Lady in Red as my ringtone on my phone. pat

Babette wrote:How do you make your cell phone TALK to you? I tried to record my own ringtone - I found that function, and said "This is your Dad calling" but it is so low - even with the volume turned up - I can't hear it. I tried SHOUTING it, and it's still not audible enough.

I'd love to make my cell phone say who'se calling!!!! I don't always remember the ring tones I set on various people - other than Mom, of course. All things must stop for Her Royal Highness.

I have Nextel, and a Motorola Razr. If you have any tips, send them my way!!!

And Bookbear - Are you my former boss? He wouldn't even wear a wristwatch!!!! Can you imagine how difficult it was to say to the Mayor of a Major Metropolitan City (HIS boss) that I have no idea where he is, nor when he will be back, because he doesn't use his computer calendar, doesn't wear a pager or cell, and doesn't keep track of time. I used to call every office I could think of in town and ask "Is my boss there?"

But I must say - those of you without TV are so much more productive and creative than the rest of us. I keep trying to Kill My TV, but I keep going back. It's the worst addiction - I swear it's more destructive to our civilization than Meth - but it's LEGAL. Sigh...

Cheers,
B.

To give this thread some *balance*, here's another old guy's perspective:

This embarrasses my wife, but mine is "Dirty Deeds, Done Dirt Cheap" by AC/DC*

I alternate between that and the opening sequence to Mozart's G minor symphony.

*easily the best thing to come out of OZ, 'cept maybe good red wine.

Well, since my ex asked for a divorce it's been "Girls just wanna have fun" Cindy Lauper. I did have Tubular Bells (Theme from Exorcist) until I was in a new member's class at church and my phone went off ... nice ... It was either that or Hell's Bells (don't know which would have been more embarassing). I changed it that day to "Awesome God" - but unfortunately no one called me again while in church...

Haven't bothered changing ringtones for everyone. But, if I did, it would probably go something like this:

Ex-hubby: "I want money, lots and lots of money, I wanna be rich..."
Ex-mother-in-law: "Crazy Train" DEFINITELY!!!
Babysitter/Nanny/Friend: "Angel"
Best friend in FL: "Pink" by Aerosmith (she's definitely an Aerosmith junkie)
unknown: Who can it be.... (guess I'm not that original)....

Love this thread.
To dream ... the impossible dream...

Well, my list is scarier.

For the longest time, I only had one ring tone -- "Sanitarium" by Metallica.

Now I've branched out:
My fiance gets "crazy" by Gnarls Barclay
My boss gets "One step closer to the edge, and I'm about to break" by Linkin Park
My parents get "Kyle's Mom is a Bitch" from South Park
My best buddy (who lives in a lousy neighborhood) gets the South Park version of "In the Ghetto" -- this never fails to get a laugh when it rings
General Calls get "The Looney Tunes Theme"
and VM gets "Sanitarium" by Metallica

For a while, I hade a part of "One" by Metallica when my doctor's office called
(Darkness imprisoning me
All that I see
Absolute horror
I cannot live
I cannot die
Trapped in myself
Body my holding cell)
They switched phone systems, so now, no Caller ID. It was cool as heck, tho.
The Force? Duct Tape is the Force. It has a light side & a dark side & holds the whole damn univers together!

I am a Japanophile. In Tokyo, for every subway and train station a little melody is played over the loudspeakers for each stop. When the melody is over, the doors close. And if you're not in the train by the end of the melody, you're out of luck. As the song rises to its finish, commuters run faster to make it into the train by the end of the song.

So my cell phone has different little melodies for all my friends. Pete is Shinjuku, Susan is Shibuya, Don is Ikebukuro. These melodies remind me so much of Japan, that I can almost smell the toxic bouquet of fish, soy sauce and diesel fumes. Mmmmmmmm!

I use these, 'cause they're midi files and sound great:

Here's a real station recording in Shinjuku:
