LeenMan, you might appreciate the Respironics Simplicity then. The nasal cushion is about the same size as the simple nasal cushion of the CL2 and instead of the adjustable hard plastic piece between forehead and bridge of nose there is just soft adjustable strap. I really like my Simplicity. Its the first mask that's both comfortable and seals well for me, back or sides.

Sharon, that ear pain? Is it like the pressure when you are in an airplane or high in the mountains? Do you ears plug up when you try to swallow w/your mask and xPAP on?

I have pretty much gotten over that. It had to do w/figuring out how to swallow or at least open your mouth w/o letter the air pressure escape when on xPAP. I'm afraid I can't tell you how to do that or to ease the ear discomfort. Its something I just finally learned how to do w/o realizing how or what I do.

I do remember that often when I'd first put my mask on while sitting up it would often happen, but when I slid down into bed my ears would clear.

I can definitely say that the worst of it was when using the FF Mask. Now I use a 406 Nasal "petite". It seems to have helped the jaw pain. It's alot less than it was. Ear pain still comes and goes...it;s like ear pressure you get on an airplane.

My pressure is 4 to 15 but is mostly likely settling around 10 which is what it took in titration to stop events. Anyway, I get what I call 'airplane ears' which is pressure such as you would feel when the airplane is ascending or descending. It is getting better thankfully, but I have no idea why. Perhaps because I've learned to keep my mouth closed while on the CPAP. (Still can't seem to keep it closed at other times.)

As to the jaw pain, do you think your headgear is too tight? Is it holding your jaw in an unfamiliar position?

not as bad as when in an airplane, not sharp pain like that...i suffer something awful during take-off and landing, especially on a short trip, but yeah, like when you go to a higher altitude and your ears pop, except that i can't "unpop" them, as it were, and there is a little zap of pain when i swallow...not every time, but often enough that it bugs me and wakes me on occasion, plus that squelchy sound that i mentioned, it's a little disconcerting...

I always hesitate to say that I am still tired and that I developed new problems for fear of discouraging new cpap users. At the same time, it is comforting to know that those of us who do not see immediate results are not alone. One way I keep from getting discouraged is to pay close attention to my body, state of mind and behaviors. When I do that, I acknowledge the subtle (and not always subtle) positive effects of cpap for me thus far. For example, while it is true I don't have a big increase in energy, I also don't fall asleep in my chair in front of the TV every evening. I hardly ever take weekend naps any more. Yea -- those are positive changes for me.
janna,
thanks for the encouragement...i have to say that in the beginning i did start to notice things, like the fact that i could choose to nap or not, and the fact that i could stay awake all the way till bedtime, just like a real grownup , but even though i've been compliant other than a month off for septoplasty, i'm still struggling so much...i've tried to keep a positive attitude, and i am very committed, but i must admit that i'm disappointed: i'm sticking with the therapy, i'm medicated for my limb movements, i'm on iron supps and i've had surgery to correct my breathing difficulties...still, i seem to be backsliding to the point where i feel worse than before...i hate to whine, and i wouldn't want to be the reason that a newcomer becomes discouraged, but i have to say that i'm continuing to fray around the edges and feeling pretty damn sorry for myself

again, thanks for the pep talk...i'll keep on keepin on...what else can i do, right?

i have been on cpap for 12 months now and it is a huge struggle for me. i feel like im in a slow motion movie. Mostly feels like im living on borrowed time...the latest development is an urge to vomit, along with the usual headaches etc etc. im 100% compliant and never go to bed with out the hose even though i still feel like crap all the time. last week i got so frustrated i curled up in bed without cpap and drifted off into a wonderful deeep sleep and woke up feeling ten times worse than i would if i had used the machine. the machine wins you just got to stick with it

Sharon,
I agree with all the thing written about muscular tension etc.
However, those ear symptoms you describe remind me of what I felt when I had either middle ear or outer ear infections. My outer ear infections were fungal - a the way swimming pool water accumulated in one ear it somehow never comes out properly - ever since I plug that one ear when I swim.

Infections can cause fluid accumulation in you ear (just like they can cause swelling in an infected finger), and when it moves about it hurts.
You read should see an ENT about them - ASAP. Ear infection are not to be trifled with -
