Guest vs No Guest

Post by WearyOne » Fri Jun 01, 2007 1:46 pm

I'll probably be sorry I did this, but a post or two on another thread got me to thinking, so I just wanted to throw it out there, without hijacking the other thread. I've read so much about it, I'm just curious. If this question has been asked and answered before, I apologize.

What's the difference between posting as a "guest" or a "registered user"? People may know me by my "made up" registered name, but that's all they have to know, unless I choose to tell otherwise.

I'm registered as "WearyOne," and I could have "made up" everything on my registration and not filled in anything that wasn't required. I don't have to put my picture (and I don't ) as my avatar. So as this type of registered user, unless I tell someone who I am, where I live, etc, what's the difference between that and a guest as far as anonymity goes?

as a registered user you are at the very least a consistent persona here with a trackable history of posts/viewpoints. Instead of someone who just hits and runs with comments out of the blue.

That can be the difference between a heckler and a simply opinionated person. (yah, I probably fall into the latter

I am all for going as a registered user versus a guest even if you prefer to go "stealth" for whatever reason.

I had my photo as an avatar. I did not feel that was a good idea careerwise for various reasons.

On the other hand, this sites flakiness of logging in and ending up posting as a guest when we/I didn't mean too.....thats a whole other issue.

Well as a Guest, we have no idea who you are or what you look like.

As a registered user with an avatar, we have no idea who you "really" are but we feel we know you because you look like a cat ...

Believe me, DreamStalker, you want the cat picture, not mine!

What I can't understand is, why do some people imagine their "cyber friends" to be so much nicer than their "real life" friends?

For better or worse, the internet tends to encourage personality extremes, and did I mention that there's a full moon right now?

Connie, I LOVE your avatar. I was just mentioning to my son last night there's no way our cat (my avatar, obviously ) could fall asleep in her food like that--She's too obsessed with eating it!

blarg, love it!

Not only was it a full moon, it was also a "blue moon" (on May 31st if you live in the Americas).

We don't have real life friends, we don't have to, "We have the Internet". Jim
