Hi Chris! Welcome to the forum.

Condensation + dripping water would be the main considerations with refrigerated water. You certainly don't want any condensation to get into the CPAP machine, and water underneath the machine could be problematic too.

Masks do have a life span, but it's different for each person and each mask. I have heard that a mask that is ready for replacement won't hold a seal, so if your insurance will buy new masks on a schedule (3 months or 6 months), be sure to take advantage of this.

Good luck with your therapy!
Cathy

Chris,

That's the way I like it and have been using unheated humidification since the beginning of my therapy. I tried it heated for a night or two and didn't like it. I also keep my distilled water in the refrigerator. The cooler temps help keep my nasal passages open during the night. There are also quite a few others on the forum that use unheated humidification.
As far as the cushions go, you're showing the same mask that I use....UMFF. I've been using the same mask with the same seals for over 2 years, now, and can't really detect much (if any) deterioration of the seals. I'm also a minimalist when it comes to cleaning my mask, too. (maybe 3 times a year)
I'm curious to see how long this one will last......

Tweaking the tension of the headgear may help with your leaks. I wear mine with the top straps very loose and most of the tension on the bottom straps. I have the forehead piece in the full-upright position. Proper mask size is also important. If you didn't get the right size, that could account for leaks, too. If you want to check the size, go to CPAP.COM's site and use their mask sizing guide. For the UMFF you'd want to use option #5. If you find your measurements are about halfway between sizes, I would recommend selecting the next larger size.

Best wishes,

Den

So refrigerated water doesn't cause condensation problems? Good to know, with summer coming! Thanks, Den.

OOOO! What a great idea - fridge water! I'll have to give it a spin. I've been doing #1 setting on the humidifier hoping to not get condensation. It's an issue in this damp chilly climate. But with warmer weather, I'm gonna try this.

Thanks!
B.

No problems. The only condensation I can actually notice (on occasions) is when the cold moist air meets the warm breath or body temps in the mask.
I would actually think there would be a higher chance of condensation getting into the machine from a heated humidifier.....but I imagine the engineers who designed these things thought that one through more than I have.

The only problem I see with using very cold water, on a Remstar Classic the metal floor of the HH tank, will sweat a little water. I don't know if it's enough to wet the electronics on the HH. I just use room temp distilled water, and use the HH as a passover and cool the room to 66 degrees. Jim

I'm going to try the refrigerated water. I've been using room temperature water, & the room A/C, and the CPAP air always feels hot with the humidifier on. I gotta try this.

And about cleaning the mask -- I cleaned my Mirage Quattro last night, nd it sealed right for the first time since the first night. My F&P 432 I just rubbed with a towel. The quattro's outer seal is much thinner, so I washed it instead of the rub with the towel so I wouldn't tear it.

Major difference. I'm gonna rinse it every night now. The seal part pops off easily anyway.

The Force? Duct Tape is the Force. It has a light side & a dark side & holds the whole damn univers together!

cool water

Post by Mark_Ferman » Wed May 30, 2007 1:58 pm

I have been using Fridge cooled distilled water for weeks now (thanks to a great post here by the way) with the humidifier on 0. It is fantastic, especially on the warm nights here in the northeast. I tried regular distilled water with the humidifier off for weeks and it was still stiflingly hot in my mask, but once I tried the water from the refrigerator it was like having a small portable Air Conditioner blowing at my face (gently). IT IS WONDERFUL and I can sleep again.

Oh man, this is such good news! I don't have AC and it can get pretty stifling in my room in the summer. Weeee!!!!!

Cheers,

I AM!

BTW, it didn't do alot for me last night. It was okay. I was too busy being frustrated by mask leaks to feel any great soothing cool breezes...

That's because of the small size of the HH Tank, if you use a 55 gal barrel, the cool will last much longer. It's all in the volume. Jim

I wondered about that when I was putting the tank in. The cpap next to it was pretty toasty just from sitting there shining it's little blue buttons all day. I'll be that water didn't stay cold for long anyway.
