OT what kind of exercise do you like?

Post by catbirdgirl » Wed May 23, 2007 3:03 pm

I figured I'd ask because a lot of our docs want us exercising and losing weight and stuff.

I joined a gym, and today I went to aqua aerobics, and I think I like it but it kicked my butt. Thats how out of shape I am! I also have been doing treadmills and ellipticals and things.

I just do Pull Ups, the bad part, I don't have a Gym, I use the Kitchen Table. The Dr. says, I do too many. Jim

I like the elliptical cross trainer and also rowing machines. Sometimes do the stair stepper too. Have been away from exercising for awhile but have a new gym opening in June about a mile from my home. I am ready to get back to it.

I used to do Heineken bicep curls but they give me a headache now so I stopped doing them ... now I just do squats on the sofa in front of the TV.

I work out at a gym 5 times each week, doing the treadmil at 15% incline for 35 minutes each time, plus weights/cables three days out of five.

Cycling is my favorite

Post by t-bone » Wed May 23, 2007 4:41 pm

I like to ride my bicycles (well, only one of them at any given moment, but I have two bikes). The faster bike is the one I'll be riding on the event called RAIN in July, during which I will cycle from Terre Haute to Richmond Indiana in one day--about 160 miles. The slower bike is the one I ride to the grocery, to work, to the post office, the library, and so on--it's set up to carry stuff.

I like swimming but as far as exercise goes that is all I like.
When forced I would do treadmill and eliptical.

I like to swim ... used to have a house with built-in pool.

Also the Stairmaster machines or newer Eliptical trainers are excellent workouts.
CPAP therapy started on 5/5/07.

Been walking 3 miles a day, six days a week for about three years now. Used to run 10k's in my younger days.

No real weight loss....get I need to push back from the table sooner.

Swimming, walking, rowing, biking - all are great exercises. You need to do something that you enjoy and that is convenient for you to do.

If you want to get in the absolute best shape and spend a minimum amount of time exercising each week, then you can't beat free weights. Hire a trainer to start with and never overdo the amount of weight or the number of repetitions.

Read a few books and get your form down for all the exercises and after some months you will no longer need the trainer.

I've been enjoying riding my bike to work. It's one mile, uphill both ways. I ride right by the university gym, and have been trying to get that workout up to three times a week, but it's going slowly, because I'm a lazy Southerner with a busy schedule, and my poor ole knees will just take so much. I was raised to never run unless someone was chasing me.

I never run if I can walk, never walk if I can sit, and never sit if I can lay down. That explains a lot about my weight, but I'm a victim of my heritage. It's hot down here.

I doubt that you are a victim of your heritage. I come from a very Southern heritage and it is hotter and more humid here than in Greensboro. I was a high energy person, slim, athletic and very active career-wise, traveling globally, speaking at conferences, out very late at night maintaining hundreds of business contacts.

And then in my forties things began to change. Now that you mention it, maybe one of the first symptoms I noticed was wanting to sit down when everyone else was standing.

I was becoming a victim of sleep apnea and my guess is you are too.

One tough thing for me has been to rid myself of guilt for becoming so lethargic and withdrawn. I keep having to tell myself that it is a physical problem not a character failure.

Best wishes for you.

The RAIN ride is quite an event. Lots of miles in one day. You have to average over 12-14 miles and hour for about 12-13 hours. Very very impressive! I could never undertake an event like that. We have 25-30 mile rides here and that's enough for me. Go get em!

Some of my rides feel like they are uphill both ways too.
