Hey all, I've been a lurker for a while and just had my titration study. Thought I might share my experiences so far.
After arming myself with loads of data taken from here(thanks all) and other sites, I went to the sleep clinic. The RRT was wonderful. Very kind, very helpful, very adamant. "My, but you are very informed about OSA and treatment options. We'll start you NCPAP and see how you will do."
To make a long story longer, I found out the 'script had already been written for NCPAP! She just plugged in the pressure#. No use trying to educate her as she is doing her job. (and very well I might add!)
Although I did try. I explained that if my pressure was high whileon my back but not nearly as much on my side, wouldn't an APAP be a better fit for me? Ready? "What's an APAP?" I slept rough with a titration level of 11. I'll just deal with the DME.
Now it gets good. The DME says he is not sure what APAP is but there is no reason CPAP won"t work. Just Don't give up!!!! Besides all that extra stuff will just break anyway. THEN WHO WILL FIX IT? JUST TAKE THE CPAP AND GET USED TO IT! I almost fell over. Ihave rented the CPAP for a few weeks
because I have no choice at the moment. On to plan B.
P.S. I asked the RRT for a copy of my script and she sain in allthe years she has been doing this, she has NEVER had anyone ask for their prescription. Imagine that! This is getting long .I'll post more later as I getfurther along. Thanks for listining.......J

Amazing, isn't it, AgentJ?
I don't doubt that 99.999% of people who are prescribed cpap just go along with whatever the DME, RRT, doctor say - without question. Those are the professionals, right? They are there to set you up with the treatment the doctor ordered, right? "They know best."...right? A precious few, like Christine (IllinoisRRT) and MelMel are professionals who visit and contribute to this message board and want to learn more about what makes this kind of treatment more comfortable and more effective for their clients. But most DMEs and RRTs are woefully ignorant about cpap treatment issues - unfortunately. You really do have to be your own advocate.
