BiPAP Sleep Night Good

Post by divajojo » Tue Mar 22, 2005 1:54 pm

I had my second sleep night at the center a week ago and it was terrible (I'll get to the good part). I had an inexperienced technician who basically kept me up all night checking wires and pulling the mask so tight I felt like I was in traction. Anyway, they called me on Friday to say I needed to come back because the CPAP didn't stop my apneas and the technician, after a couple of hours, should have switched me to the BiPAP and tried the full face mask - result, the doctor couldn't use the results from the test.

I went back last night (which was good because my gas had been turned off so I was still able to have a hot shower this morning. It's being turned back on today.) and it was much better. I was surprised at how easy the full face mask was to use and it kept me from opening my mouth involuntarily. I had a different technician and the night went smoothly. I still didn't realize I had gone to sleep. I swear I was lying there listening to the machine, aware of every breath and movement when the technician came over the intercom and said she had to check my mask because there was a slight leak - I said fine, I hadn't even been to sleep yet. She came in and apologized, I told her, I haven't even gone to sleep yet. She said, NO, you have been to sleep . . . it's 1:30am (I had gone to bed at 11:00pm.) Unfortunately, that meant I couldn't answer the questionnaire the next morning with any degree of certainty:

How long did it take you to fall asleep?
I don't know, I didn't know I was asleep.

How many times did you wake up?
I don't KNOW . . . didn't know I'd gone to sleep.

How many hours of sleep did you get?
I don't know . . . I DON'T KNOW!!!!!!!

Anyway, I'm looking forward now to getting my own machine. The only problem I had was major leaking when I turned on my side, but I'm sure experimenting with it at home, we can come to an understanding. The only one I'll disturb is the cat and she just goes to another room. I did have a headache the next morning, but I know that was from the headgear - with the wires, I was awkward with moving my head when I needed to and I'm paying for it this morning.

Well, I just missed the gas man . . . maybe the cat will keep me warm.

Anyway, I'm now looking more forward to getting my own machine, playing around with it and finally getting some sleep that doesn't try to kill me. I'll be writing more and asking more questions.
I have never seen the righteous forsaken . . .
