took 4 months; AHI 1.4!

Post by girlsaylor » Sat Apr 28, 2007 8:15 am

Hi friends,

Once again you all succeeded! Last night's AHI was 1.4!

I've tried several masks, and thought the hybrid was the best for me. But the AHI numbers I was achieving were averaging between 3.5 and 4. While those numbers are considered within normal parameters, I still felt that either the pressures needed further tweaking (maybe still could be tweaked), or the mask leaks were too large. I was very comfortable with the hybrid, but recently, from the kind Miss Dozer, I was able to give the Optilife a try.

The Optilife needed a bit of tweaking, but I finally hit the right combination, I think. And I was really wanting to be sure that I wasn't breathing through my mouth, as I wanted the full mask selection available to me. As it turns out, I must not be mouth breathing, or very little anyhow. I tightened down my newly tweaked Optilife a bit more last night, and it felt very secure. Tightened down the chin strap a bit to keep the pillows up against my nose a bit more. That's all I can think that I did different.

I'm raising my coffee cup to you all!

girlsaylor,

Kudos for sticking with it. You've had a lot of obstacles to overcome in your treatment and it hasn't been easy for you. So how are you feeling?

Brian

Low AHI

GirlSaylor,

It's so good to hear your news flash! Yes, it's helpful to have support (SO VERY MUCH SO!), but without your perseverance you couldn't have achieved this level of progress. Congratulations!

Kathy

Hooray!!! Score another one for the good guys. I'm always thrilled when my AHI reads lower than 4.0 For most part my AI is 0 and on bad nights as high as 0.4 But I feel great so I'm extremely happy with my #s. Guess thats what matters most-how I feel.

Glad to hear that things are turning around for you. I went back to re-read your post on March 8th.....when you were about to throw in the towel. Congratulations on overcoming a lot of adversity.

Best wishes,

Congrats on the progress! I'm presently working with the Hybrid and it's a challenge to get the AHI down, but I'm making progress. Tightened it up last night and dropped a whopping 2 points, so that's progress. May you breathe forever!

And I'm sleeping mostly through the night now

Post by girlsaylor » Sat Apr 28, 2007 3:56 pm

I guess in my haste I forgot to add that I'm sleeping through the night most nights now. If I waken, I usually go right back to sleep. And I'm feeling fairly energetic for being past the spring chicken mark!

Pleased to hear your news! But I think the AI is much more important than the AHI. Do you really notice an improvement? Are you feeling better too? Any other positive improvements.

Me too

Congrats GirlSaylor. Its really nice to be over the hump and be scoring low AHI's and waking up feeling rested. I know cos its just started for me too.
I went around today with a feeling of energy that I haven't had for a long time.

And of course I am really grateful to the CPAPtalk crowd who hugged me when I came in sniffling on a dry CPAP and coached me into getting an APAP so I could start tracking leak rates. And I got horrified when I saw my leak rates and taped, padded my cheeks, velcroed my Swift, changed masks until one worked. The leak rate went down, the AHI's got to 1's and I started feeling better.

Thanks guys,
I hope I can do the same for the newbies who come in after me

John M

Just a quick question: An AHI <15 is considered "normal." How many patients here get a little stressed if their AHI is >10 but <15? Is it just a matter of personal satisfaction of getting an AHI <10 or some other reason? What AHI do patients in here aim to achieve with treatment?

AHI < 5 is considered normal in adults. AHI < 1 is considered normal in children (prepubescent).

This is where the confusion lies. Our criteria has "normal" as being <15. Do you guys use oronasal thermistors or nasal pressure transducers to measure flow?
