I find myself in yet another quandary needing your help!

Post by whatrdreamsmadeof » Mon Apr 16, 2007 7:07 pm

What originally brought me to cpap treatment a year ago, were several falls, memory problems, and difficulty at work. Since beginning treatment, even though the rough time of finding a good pressure( not great pressure) I have felt steady improvement in all those problem areas that brought me to cpap. Last night I could not get to sleep, despite being tired and sleepy, and when I did sleep it was very restless and sporatic. When I got out of bed this morning though I was not sleepy, I was very foggy, forgetful, and I did lose my balance, thankfully an ottoman broke the fall. So my question is why would one nights sleep have so much impact on how I feel and function? The more I pondered this the more depressed I became. Has anyone experienced this after just one night? Any clue why? and should I expect to have days like this? Should I start thinking about working from home (if that's even possible) when I experience this?
Any advice or help is greatly appreciated.........Thanks Bunches..Ellen

Dear Whatdreamsaremadeof

I'm sorry to hear about your bad night and the reaction to it. I am sure someone here can help or at least encourage you.

regards

How do you feel during strong emotional periods like laughter, anger, fear? Notice any muscle weakness during those times?

What kind of medication are you taking?

I don't know your family/medical history but I would talk to your doctor about what you experienced. Tell them you think you may have had a TIA and make them rule it out. If you have not had a complete cardio workup in some time, now would be that time. Excluding any reactions to medication you might be taking, your symptoms mimic that of a mild TIA. It is also important to distinguish the difference between limb numbness and loss of motor control. Stroke symptoms would more than likely be one sided vs both but don't let that prevent you from seeking treatment.

It is something you should NOT ignore, you should see your doctor ASAP to have at least a EKG. Research any and all medications you might be taking, make sure you are drinking at least 64oz of water per day.
someday science will catch up to what I'm saying...

Your falls (and other symptoms) may have nothing (or very little) to do with apnea. You may be having TIA's (transient ischemic attacks... 'mini' strokes) and should see a neurologist, or at least your GP about them.

Definitely check with your doctor regarding your falling episode. I have never heard of that in regards to sleep apnea. The memory problems can be a sign of apnea or a sign of a neurological problem.

As for the foggyness you felt after one bad night, that's "normal." For me, if I have a bad night I wake up exhausted almost like I was in my pre-cpap days. If this happens I will go back to sleep for a couple of hours to see if it helps. If it doesn't, I call in. I will also have a rebound day the next day and still be very tired, but not as exhausted. I find if I have a restless night or if my DB does (meaning, he wakes me up many times), then I know I will have a bad morning.

Don't get down about it. Just realise that you may experience bad days every once in awhile. I try and minimize those as much as possible by trying to keep on a good sleep schedule. Just know that sometimes these things are out of our control.

Please let us know how you're doing.

Ellen, you should get help right away, if you haven't done so already. According to the American Heart Association:

TIAs are extremely important predictors of stroke. Don't ignore them! If symptoms appear, CALL 9-1-1 TO GET MEDICAL HELP IMMEDIATELY. A doctor should determine if a TIA or stroke has occurred, or if it's another medical problem with similar symptoms. Some examples are seizure, fainting, migraine headache, or general medical or cardiac condition. Prompt medical or surgical attention to these symptoms could prevent a fatal or disabling stroke from occurring.

This is not to scare you. My mom has had some TIA's and now recognizes this as the right thing to do.

I'll second the good advice offered by Snoredog and the others.
I wish you the best also, Ellen. Please have things checked out by your physician!

Ellen,

I'm glad to hear you got some doctors' appointments made. That sounds a little scary. Needless to say, I hope all will be well.
