Leak Rate in OSCAR

Post by JackieLee » Mon Sep 14, 2026 9:29 am

Which leak rate statistic is the most important to keep an eye on, if any one of them applies?

If the leaks are waking you up....unwanted and need to be fixed from the standpoint of disturbing you sleep no matter how big or little they are.

If the leaks aren't waking you up...pay attention to how much time you spend OVER 24 L/Min along with how long you spend over 24 L/min.
Example 15 minutes over 24 L/min isn't a big deal.
Example 1 hour at maybe 28 L/min isn't a big deal either.
The machine can actually compensate for quite a bit of leak up to somewhere around 30 -35 L/min and above 35 L/min we start to question effectiveness and or how much we can trust a low AHI....is it low because nothing happened or because the machine couldn't sense thing optimally.

The 24 L/min line in the sand (set by ResMed when using their machine but other brands can have different lines in the sand) is IMHO an ultra conservative line in the sand.

So it depends how far you go past that line in the sand AND how long you stay there.

Example 50 L/Min leak for half the night....serious issue. But 50 L/min for 10 minutes ....not a big deal and only affects reliability of the date during the big leak.

Don't expect perfect 0.0 leak line all night....that's an unrealistic goal and will drive you nuts trying to get it.

Thanks for weighing in Pugsy, but I'm reeeaaallll 'green' so where on Oscar can I find the stat of 24 you are referring to?

It's not an OSCAR evaluation or line in the sand.
It's ResMed line in the sand and in the ResMed literature. ResMed has used the 24 L/min as the line in the sand ever since time began I think.

The graph in OSCAR metrics are in L/Min.

See this thread there is a good example there

Thanks again Pugsy! I'm going to try to discern something from your post. Correct me if I'm wrong, and I probably am, the important number to stay well under is 24 on our 95%?

Any 95% number just means that for 95% of the time you were at or below that number for 95% of the time.
95 % numbers are easily elevated though by short periods of time in large leak which is what happened to me.
Remember in my example the 95% number was 48 L/Min but when I actually looked at the leak graphs it was easily seen that there was just a couple of segments of time where the leaks were worrysome......the bulk of the night was well within the machine's ability to compensate.
95% numbers do NOT mean that is where you were at for 95% of the night.

And yes if the 95% number for leak is less than 24 then there wasn't really a problem with large leaks negatively impacting therapy itself.
The machine can compensate for that amount of leak easily.
For myself I don't even bother looking at the leak graphs if the 95% number is 24 L/min or less.
Quite honestly my own personal line in the sand is 30 L/min.

Again as long as you are sleeping through the leaks.....if they are waking you up no matter what the leak number then we worry but only because leaks are messing with sleep. Remember anything that wakes us up is unwanted.

This was me from last night. I assume the 95% leak rate with a good rate most of the night and a blast at the end is what you are referring to? Ooops. I thought I attached it.

I figured it out. Check out the overnight leak rate. 95% for this night 33.6%

Yeah, your leak rate was really quite acceptable until something happened to the mask around 4:20 AM for maybe 30 minutes or so and then you ended the sleep session...probably the leak finally woke you up.

If that were my report I would just shrug my shoulders and move on and not give it a second thought.

I actually used the percentage. My 95% was 12. The 99.5% was 33.60! (Senior moment)
