Quadriplegic CPAP Problems

Post by THYMER » Thu Jan 22, 2026 5:41 pm

Hey Everyone,

I'm a C5-C6 Quadriplegic. I had a sleep study. The results were severe central apnea. I used a full mask. Went to sleep. They changed to BiPAP when my apnea started. I quickly woke up gasping for air. They tried different adjustments but, I couldn't find a setting that would allow me to comfortably breathe. It seemed to push a lot of air in but, my exhale is very weak. I felt like my lungs/body was blowing up like a balloon. Always ended up with me unable to breathe and panicking. It reminds me of what happened when I was on a ventilator. I ended up sleeping the last 2 hours without the CPAP.

Now, they want to try ASV. Anyone have any experience with this?

Any quads here with weak exhaling, that have found a setting/device that works for them?

Thanks,

Tim
