Using someone else's CPAP machine?

Post by Kiesha » Mon Jan 05, 2026 3:43 pm

Hello,
I currently have the Resmed S9 that's just not functioning properly anymore. I currently have access to a ResMed Air Sense 11 that's only been used 5 times.

Backstory: I took care of my baby sister. She was really sick and only 35; unable to walk, kidney failure, diabetes, MS, diabetic neuropathy, cognitive decline. I noticed she was snoring and always so tired so we got a sleep study done. They gave her the Airsense 11. She barely used it due to mobility issues, she struggled to adjust the mask and flat out refused to use it despite me trying to help her at night. I was so overwhelmed being a caregiver and watching my sister slowly decline, I missed the letter saying that she needed to return the machine due to not using it. As a result, the company sent her to collections. At that time, we'd been told that she was dying and the last thing on my mind was a CPAP machine. My sister sadly lost her battle December 23 2024. I eventually called and asked if they'd take it back but never received a reply.

Question: I still have the machine. Could I use it? Or has it been bricked since she was not compliant? I know this one is like wifi. It's distributed by Lincare. I've asked for a new machine but was told a new sleep study would be required. The facility my doctor sent me to is backed up. If I'm able to use it, could I program it with the same specs as my ResMed S9?

Thank you for your time.

Yes you can use the machine and it won't be locked to prevent you from doing anything with it. They can't/won't do that sort of thing.

We should be able to mimic whatever settings you have been using on the S9 depending on exactly which model the AirSense 11 happens to be.

So....what are your current S9 settings (all of them) and exactly which model AirSense do you have?

Here are the instructions for getting into the clinical setup menu to change the settings to match your current machine.

Hi. Thank you so much for your reply. I uploaded the settings and attached a link below. Regarding the Air Sense model, I found reference number 39517 which says it's a 'ResMed AirSense 11 AutoSet CPAP'. May I ask one other question. I love the Quattro Mirage Full Face Mask. I was told that it's no longer being manufactured. Is there a comparable mask for the Air Sense 11?

Did you check if you could buy it anywhere? I just did a search for it and it's showing available and in stock at several online retailers.

My DME company told me that a few months ago! I can purchase out of pocket and reimburse myself with my HSA. The mask that came with my sister's was the Air Touch F20. I may give it a try. Thank you so much for all of your help. I'm grateful..

Hi. Is it ok to try the auto set? It has a standard range of 4-20.

Your old machine was/is showing CPAP or fixed pressure mode at 8 cm.

With the new AirSense 11 AutoSet you actually have 3 modes of operation available.
1...you can use cpap mode fixed at 8
2...you can use auto mode and use a range with minimum set to 8 and max set to 8...this will make it function like cpap mode
but you could use a range of pressures if you wanted.....I would suggest minimum of 6 and maximum of 12 and then once we had data from OSCAR we could decide if changes need to be made
3...it also has a specialty auto adjusting mode called the "For Her AutoSe" .....it's a different mode and different algorithm used to drive the auto adjusting pressures.

So modes available
1..CPAP
2..AutoSet
3..For Her

I don't advise making huge changes at this time like using the 4-20 range because the 4 cm may not be very comfortable for you since you are used to 8 cm.
You could use the Autoset mode and do the minimum to equal maximum if you wish or when/if you want to try using a range in auto mode then I would use something more closely to what you have been used to...like minimum 6 and max 12 (it won't increase without what it thinks is a good reason).

The 4-20 thing is just the default settings and not really a good choice unless you happened to already be using a really low pressure all this time....like maybe 5 or 6 cm cpap fixed pressure. 4 is just too long and it can take too long for the machine to increase the pressure. It can't increase the pressure to where it needs to be in the blink of an eye. It can take a few minutes depending on where it needs to go.

Make sense???
