What Are These Straps Inside an F20 Cushion

I've been using Resmed F20 full face cushions (silicone) for about a year and have to admit I just noticed these straps inside the seal. Any idea what purpose they serve? It looks like something could slide through but for what I don't know.

I use that mask. Those ligaments help keep the edges from flipping inside out.
