Not sure if it was a bad decision but I made it anyway

Post by Schnova » Wed Jul 17, 2024 12:27 pm

Hi all,

So this might be a bit different to some of the post other users has posted and I might get some sticks for it. Bascially for as long as I could remember I have always had poor quality of sleep and I am a semi loud snorer. I suffer from non-allergic rhinitis and am on long term corticosteroid treatment but that never really helped with my poor sleep quality. I did a sleep test last year December and after waiting for 6 months I finally got my result and it says negative for OSA, I had an AHI score of 2.1 and SPo2 of 96%. I was a bit confused as I thought I had sleep apnea so I went on reddit and I see some people mention UARS and how the symptoms are similar to SA. I went to my GP to discuss my result and also about the possibility of having me having UARS but he was unsure about it and asked me to try some MAD mouthpiece and see if it helps, he asked me to try a few different ones to find one that works, I tried like 3 different brands and that didn't help. He also recommended mouth taping, nasal strip, etc, but those didn't help either. So until this point I was kinda annoyed because every treatment my GP suggests I need to try it for at least 3-5 weeks before I can make another appointment to discuss other treatments because he wants me to give it time to get used to it and I did, my sleep was worse, my jaw and teeth hurts, it was uncomfortable. He referred me to see an ENT consultant at a hospital but I am still waiting for an appointment.

I did something really stupid, I bought an Airsense 10 Autoset because I know the gold standard treatment for SA and UARS is PAP therapy. I know I havn't been tested for UARS but honestly given the symptoms I have it sounds like it.

So this post is really kinda me asking for some help wih setting up my PAP machine since I know that it is the doctor that suppose to set the pressure for you based on your test result. I just want to know if I should start on the default setting and if the default setting doesn't work what do I do? And does treatment work straight away or do I need to give it a few days, weeks or even months.

Thank you all for reading and for your help.

Jon

Where are you located?

The auto adjusting algorithm was never designed to find optimal pressures for UARS. Did you know that?

Hi Pugsy,

Wait, what? I didn't know this. Isn't PAP, or more specifically APAP used for treatment for people with UARS? I am located in London, England.

It is used to treat UARS but you can't just set it to a range of pressures or god forbid the defaults and expect the machine to fix things. Doesn't work that way.

Did that sleep study you got done mention Respiratory Event Related Arousals...RERAs?

It would have been better to have seen a doctor. However, I don't know how difficult that would be or how long you would need to wait with the NHS.

Meanwhile, since you have the machine, I suggest you try to use it and aggressively monitor your therapy with Oscar.

No, it was just a basic letter to inform me I did not have OSA and what my AHI and SPo2 values.

That's what I want to do, to use it but I don't know how I should set up the machine, as it was bought second hand, so I don't even know if previous owner user setting is on it. And also do you think I should take the machine apart and clean the inside for hygienic reason?
