I’m quite new on this forum but I work in the DME industry and help PAP patients daily. There’s been quite a few replies here so forgive me if I repeat some information in previous replies.

CSA or central sleep apnea is diagnosed through the results of a sleep study. You can get another one done if you had one already. First thing I would do is to contact your pulmonologist or sleep doctor and ask for their advice on getting a new sleep study to test for CSA. Once you perform your sleep study, over 50% of your apneas have to be listed as central sleep apnea or mixed apneas to be diagnosed for CSA. Once you obtain that diagnosis, you would qualify for not a BIPAP but a BIPAP ASV/ST. In terms of insurance guidelines, there are a few other requirements needed but that would be either handled by the DME company or will be explained to the patient as they transition. Post central sleep apnea is basically CSA that occurs during the NREM which are the light stages of sleep. It’s still classified under CSA and falls under the same category. The simple explanation for the differences between OSA and CSA is OSA is the physical collapse of your airway during sleep. CSA is when your brain lacks the drive to breathe during sleep. Basically your brain forgets to breathe at night. CPAP pushes air into your lungs when you breathe out. BIPAP pushes air when you breathe in and breathe out. And IIRC, BIPAP ASV/ST sucks air and pushes air. These are questions I would definitely bring up with your pulmonologist. Make sure to follow up with your doctor 90 days after you first receive your PAP and then at least yearly so you can get new prescriptions for your supplies. Prescriptions only last yearly.

I can definitely see that. I hear complaints all the time about bigger companies like Apria and Rotech. I work for a smaller company so we emphasize on patient care. I work with Medicare patients so I unfortunately get the strict end of insurance guidelines. However, I try my best to explain in detail how Medicare billing works and the guidelines that follow behind it.

Nope! Just a brief discourse on post-arousal centrals. I think I'm good re: CPAP Machines, reimbursement, algorithms and the like.
