Is anyone still using their System one CPAP machine?

Post by jojopuppyfish » Sat Apr 29, 2023 5:56 am

Even after the recall, I received a Dream station 2 and bought a Resmed 10 machine. And I still prefer using the System One with my Swift FX mask. I sleep through the night and get better sleep.
My question is, how many people are still using the System One even after the recall announcement?
Is it really even a problem to us the machine with the original foam in place? From the data I've read, I'm not even sure its as big of a problem as its made out to be. The foam on this unit isn't connected to the actual breathing path. It sits under the motor.

I took mine apart prior to returning it. I can assure you the foam is in the air path where it sits under the motor.
AirSence 10 Autoset, Dreamstation 2 backup, Swift FX, Z1 for travel.

But is it really making anyone sick?
I'm not convinced based on the data that has been put out there.
The foam has to be decaying. Either by ozone treatment or extreme humidity.
And even then, the amount of people filing claims is very very low.

The truth is the new machines I bought aren't giving me the quality sleep that the system one has for 10 years. That's my problem.
Anyways, I just wanted to know if anyone is still using their system one at this point in time.

This is the kind of thing that would take years to suss out if it could be sussed at all. I mean, the kinds of issues that would be caused by inhaling 3 micrometer particles into your lungs night after for many years under slight pressure? Those are the kinds of issues that would be easily attributable to a host of other causes - provable and not provable - whether those causes apply to someone's case or not. There have been over the years multiple "safe" pharma drugs, even OTC pharma drugs, pulled from the market entirely due to some long term health issue but only after years of "safe" usage. If your goal is to be an enthusiastic guinea pig for PM 3.0 lung pollution then have at it. As for myself I have opted out of that experiment to whatever extent possible.

The decay is most likely only sped up by ozone treatment or extreme humidity. I am confident the decay is occurring at all times and with a variable rate of decay, with the rate dependent on environment and perhaps other factors like variation in the composition of the foam from batch to batch.

Here are my truths:
1) I got great CPAP treatment from the System One Series 50 for 10 years without any side effects.
2) I have been unsuccessful, so far, in transitioning to the Dreamstation 2 nor the Resmed 10 machines

There are little things, too, that I miss on the system one that these two machines doesn't have....such as the ramp button. The other two I have to stop the session and restart it.
The lights on the new machine don't just off the way the system one does.

I have a swift FX mask and 22MM tubing that works great with the system one but doesn't work so great on the newer machines.
I bought a P10 mask which worked well on the newer machines except its been giving me headaches.

So please take this thread as just me venting and knowing that I need to move off the system one but just haven't gotten the great results on the other two machine. So I'm frustrating.
Thanks.

I used mine for 6 years, long before the recall. I have kept it as a backup. If the 6 years of using it didn't cause problems, a few weeks if necessary until I can get a replacement for my current machine isn't going to kill me.

We've had to evacuate our home twice for wildfires in our area. Each time we've thankfully had time to pack. But my PRS1 sits by my door because many people in my town had only minutes to get out before their homes burned down. I'd rather have SOME machine than none, particularly after a disaster like that.

I can't address using the machine long term still, but that's your call.

You could also remove the foam, as seen here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SQnJAF3bm98 It shouldn't affect performance.
