Mask question from a new CPAP user - Thank you!

Post by EML » Mon Apr 24, 2023 1:55 pm

HI All,

I just stated CPAP with a full face mask. When purchasing equipment My specialist asked if I sleep with my mouth open or closed. i said I haven’t the foggiest idea b/c I am sleeping! So she suggested starting g with a full mask. My question to the group is: Even if I do sleep with my mouth closed, is there any downside to using the full mask other than the size and discomfort? Also , does anyone switch off between full and nose only?

HI All,

welcome to the zoo!

choosing THE right mask for you is one of the most difficult choices one has to make in the apnea journey. what works for me may not work for thee.

that said, yes there are plenty of folk here who switch between styles of masks. they'll come along shortly to let you know.

i hope you find the "just right" mask for you soon. i use a nasal pillow mask because i have a full beard and do not want to shave. i've had to go through some things to get it to work, but it works fine and been with the mask for over seven years.

whatever you decide, best of luck to you!

Hi I'm new too and still searching for the right mask. The YouTube guy lankylefty27 has a lot of videos on the topic and he does mention a full face mask is handy even if it's not your primary mask. That's because on days when a cold or allergies attack your nose you can still use your CPAP device.

I think the better question is whether you breathe through your nose during the day. If you do, there's a decent chance you could use a nasal pillow mask or a nasal mask.
