still having problems - remstar plus noise vs remstar auto

Post by humaliens » Mon Mar 14, 2005 12:38 pm

Hello everyone,

Still can't get past a few 2 hours on this thing. THe remstar plus set at 10. Actually I keep waking after 1 hour then determined to try another hour. Even on sleep med Remeron, but it's the mask and the noise of the cflex or something that is bugging me.

I did move the system below the bed as Derek mentioned would help and it did take some noise away.

I want to gofrom the resperonics comfort gel to an Activa mask. And is the remstar plus louder than an Remstar Auto?

Does anybody have any complaints on the loudness of the Remstar Auto? Also falling asleep from ramp of 4 in 30minutes seems fine but I seem to struggle to fall asleep.

I wish this would work for me as I'm a mess with fatigue. 11 hours in bed and never reach a restful nights rest. 2 years of suffering.

Rick.

I think my auto is pretty quiet, but then I think most trucks are too (my snoring never woke me)

Seriously, I do think it is relatively quiet; less than a window A/C.

No Comparisons

Post by felineperson3 » Mon Mar 14, 2005 4:10 pm

I have nothing to compare my RemStar auto with since it's the only machine that I've used since I was placed on therapy, but it is very quiet! The first machine I was given was defective and would suddenly ramp up to high pressures even before I could go to sleep and it made a lot of noise and would practically blow the mask off my face. Since then my main difficulty has been to find a mask that I could tolerate and that didn't leak at the higher pressures. My last purchase was the Breeze and I have had good luck with it so far--(keeping my fingers crossed). You might need to get your machine checked to be sure that it is working properly.
Wishing you luck with solving your problem and better sleep!

I currently use an auto with an Activa mask which replaced a Remstar cpap and Comfort Select mask. I haven't noticed the machine itself to be any different but the C-Flex function may make the exhalations "reverberate" in the hose a little bit which makes breathing seem more audible. The Activa mask makes a little bit more noise than the Respironics did but the difference is really small. Overall I would say the machine and circuit are still extremely quiet but you really need a reference of some sort to judge. I do have a db meter that I could measure it with but again we would need to reference the reading to something to for it to be of much value to you.

I do notice a bit more noise with the c-flex than without

The best comparison I can make is the noise level of "2001: A Space Odyssey" when you hear his breathing in the mask (before he breathes faster at the end). I actually find it soothing, like a type of white noise.

I have 2 suggestions:

1) Have you filled your humidifier up to the proper level, and set it at "4"? I would wake up when the humidifier ran out of water. That is the only time I'd wake up with the Remstar Auto.

Four seems high but it is the most comfortable for me, personally.

2) Have you tried a low-tech solution of ear-plugs? It seems to me the noise level I personally experience with the Remstar Auto would be more than compensated by ear plugs. If it's much louder than that, you may have a defective machine.

3) Finally, if worse comes to worse, you can set the Remstar Auto to respond without c-flex. Perhaps that is best for you.

Best of luck ---
Best wishes and good dreams...
