Dangers and risks are obviously relative. depending on how a product is used, the duration of the use of a product, and the general health status of the person using it.

Things that could theoretically happen are one thing. What has actually happened is another. What is common is a third category. Lipoid pneumonia is rare, because most people don't do the things most likely to cause it.

Moisture, for example, is good for the nose. Yet, running a garden hose to your nose while you sleep is not likely a good idea. In fact, even relatively small amounts of water in the lungs can be damaging, and larger amounts can cause drowning. There are no contradictions in any of those statments.

Similary, there may be reasons to use lipids and petroleum products responsibly and in harmony with packaging instructions. There are only small dangers of very rare complications, just as is the case with anything else. Nevertheless, that is not a wholesale medical-community approval for putting a couple of tablespoons of anything up one's nose on a regular basis.

If you use a product for something other than what it is designed to be used for, you are using it off-label and need to assess your own risks for how you are using it without necessarily recommending it to others (who may have very different states of health) for similar long-term off-label use, in my opinion.

Bottom line, though, is that CPAP is good for your nose. It can cause short-term dryness and irritation for some, which is usually solved by proper use of humidification. But long-term use of optimized PAP benefits every organ of the body when it solves OSA, including bringing great benefits to every part of the nose. That is the beauty of "extended CPAP usage," despite the assumption in the thread title.

Did you even read that case study.

It's a case study on a womnan who was drinking a glass of vegitable oil, with every meal.

That study also makes it clear, that lipid pneumonia is directly related to the type of oil and amount that is aspirated or inhaled. Lansinoh is more of a malleable solid and can't be compared to the study you posted.

You need to read the actual study, then reasonably interpret it and apply critical thinking.

Why not use it the way you’re supposed to by smearing a teeny bit on your skin but instead of putting it on your nips, smear it on your nasal flares. Then, blow your nose and wipe off excess so it’s tacky.

Hi all,

Currently I use the P10, with fixed pressure around 6.5 + EPR 3, humidity at 5 and tube temp at 28C. I have no issue with falling asleep with cpap but I do wake up from it feeling my nostrils is getting more irritated overtime. I have read somewhere that because of the constant blast of air into your nostrils from cpap usage, your nasal pathways will gradually tighten/swollen (get inflamed) during the course of the night to compensate for the air blast, which ends up blocking your nose overtime ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7DDgIuEtew8) . If thats the case, is there any muscle relaxant I can take to keep my nasal passage relaxed? Doesn't sound like anti-histamine would help, because thats specific to allergy relief? thanks

Same issue with me I have been on CPAP since 2014 for the first 6 month it was wonderful no nasal issues. I had had severe OSA for years wake up with headaches and my heart racing like a freight train. 6 months onward I have been fighting nasal inflammation ever since yes I use distilled water, played with the humidity, and temp used all kinds of nasal sprays like Flonase, Nascourt, and Azelastine. Sometimes I have to use afrin so I can get a good night sleep yes it rebounds I try to only use it at most once every 3-5 days it's either that or waking up dizzy, and headaches from low oxygen. I have seen an ENT basically told me that the high pressure irritates the nose and it reacts I agree because it clamps up tighter than a snare drum as soon as I put the mask on. Sometimes I can get away for a few months not using Afrin which is good. I have to use a full face mask because my mouth opens yes I tried the chin straps. People who don't have these issues likely using the nose pellows which keep the nose open more IMO. I was thinking of trying a full face that has the nasal pillows built in.

Another thing is weight management I notice when I gain weight it gets worse I suspect some fat actually builds up in the nasal passage might have some affect. I have yoyo diet although I'm not that heavy BMI of 34 but when I got my BMI down to 29 I noticed I didn't have to use anything other then once a day with flownase. It's only my own observation I do know heavier you are the more pressure might be needed which could irritate the nasal passage more.
