My wife has told me that my gender, "M," actually stands for "Married."

She runs a tight ship.

Don’t take it personally Muffy.
Interestingly, a new neighbor recently moved next door, single working mom, small child, presently in the middle of a drawn out, bitter, contested divorce. We occasionally talk, but that tension, that unease-- it's palpable.

Hey, guys are pigs, I realize that.
Freeze this moment a little bit longer.
Make each sensation a little bit stronger.
Experience slips away.

My wife would make sure I stopped breathing while awake before I got to mid oink.

Don’t take it personally Muffy.

It’s not you, it’s us.
Thanks for the vote of confidence but it is me. See above:

...that's me. I got shortcomings.
One of which is an intolerance for boorish behavior.

Now you can certainly respond with

"WTF? You're the King of Boorish Behavior!"

Now I might go with

"Crown Prince of Boorish Behavior"

but that's getting picky.

Yes I do. It is quite startling. It is not often thankfully.

That's good that it's not often! I'm not startled as much as annoyed that I keep holding my breath.

https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog ... ing-exhale

Also, for a temporary fix, sometimes whistling or singing under your breath will ensure that you are spending more time breathing out than you are spending breathing in. That, in turn, for some, can relax the part of the nervous system that is related to breathing.

It's why an actor will whistle when pretending to be nervous. And it is part of why group singing is something that many find to be particularly calming. Before COVID, anyway.

And depending on the circumstances, it helps to irritate everyone sitting near you trying to concentrate, which can often be its own reward.

Shouldn't be a problem when working from home. Cats tend to like it.

Doesn't work while wearing PAP to get used to it during wake during the day, of course, but the principle of breathing deep and then breathing out in a controlled and extended manner as if singing or humming can still apply for smoothing out awake breathing.

Just the process of concentrating on breathing in a positive, proactive way, instead of just noticing when we're 'doing it wrong,' can do wonders for some.

As one doc (celebrity ENT) put it:
The sympathetic nervous system is the classic fight-or-flight half that’s needed if you’re in a fight or running from a tiger. The parasympathetic nervous system is the relaxation half, promoting sleep, digestion and reproduction. Inhalation is activated by the sympathetic nervous system and exhalation is activated by the parasympathetic part. When you slow down your breathing, your heart rate slows down. If you take a little longer exhaling relative to inhaling, then you’re spending more time activating your parasympathetic nervous system. This is the physiologic reason why breathing techniques such as the relaxing breath is literally relaxing. These same concepts also apply to singing, humming or whistling. Notice that when you sing, you’re spending up to 10 to 20 times longer exhaling relative to inhaling. By activating your vagus (parasympathetic) nerve, this is why you feel good when you sing.--https://doctorstevenpark.com/breathinglessonssleepapnea
Of course, I consider singing to be the answer to life, the universe, and everything. And I think I discovered that fact at about age 42.
