UPS question: does the Airsense 10 require true sine wave power?

Thinking about getting a UPS for my Airsense 10 and wondering if any old one will do or whether it needs a fancy pure sine wave output one.

This is just to cover power flickers while I am asleep, not for running on battery power all night.

No I don't want a marine deep cycle battery in my bedroom.

Modified sine works just fine. I got one that's auto-switch and works great during power outages. No need to wake up to switch over to battery mode. Does it automatically.

I was concerned about this issue too----mainly because the "Resmed Battery Guide" specifically does not say that modified sine wave will work for the AS10 but does say it will work for the S9. Why would they not say so when they had an obvious chance to do so???? I can never find the battery guide on the Resmed website but Google pulls it up on a search for "Resmed Battery Guide"

I am guessing that the AC-DC power adaptor will accept any crappy AC power and rectify it to DC and convert it to 24v???? and regardless of how crappy the AC power, the DC power will be "clean" and continuous. That is the issue. I don't know though and would appreciate an expert electrical thought on this issue. I am also guessing that: if there was to be a problem---it would be on the adaptor ----which might have a shortened lifetime and not the machine (which of course is working on DC).

Has anyone ever found any luck trying to get Resmed to provide this sort of tech support?

*ALL* switch mode power supplies (like are used in the S9, Air10 and Air11 machines) first turn the AC into DC, then they use high speed switching (which is why the transformers in them are tiny compared to the old heavy, bulky power bricks), so they don't really care what you feed them with, sine wave, 'modified' sine wave, 50/60 hz, 100-250v... they just don't care.

Nobody that *knows* what their doing buys a marine deep cycle for use on land.

"Marine" is not about "deep cycle", it's about more sturdy construction to withstand the abuse that happens in a marine environment.

There are "marine" deep cycle batteries, and "marine starting batteries.

What you need is simply a "deep cycle" battery.

Like the ones in UPS devices. So if you don't want a deep cycle battery in your bedroom, then you'll need an long extension cord.

If you google "cpap" and "deep cycle marine battery" you will see what I have seen - countless discussions about using one (often contrasted with using a UPS).

When you ask the wrong question (adding 'marine' in there) you often get the wrong answers.

I guess you are saying all those people don't know what they're talking about. Fair enough. I wouldn't know. In any case I just want a UPS, not a car battery or boat battery with an inverter and a charger or whatever the popular rig is.

Marine batteries are designed specifically for use on a boat, with heavier plates and robust construction designed to withstand the vibration and pounding that can occur onboard any powerboat.

As long as you're willing to have a tiny amount of runtime by comparison, knock yourself out.

Your average computer UPS is sized to give you 10-15 minutes of runtime when the power goes out, to let you shut down the computer cleanly. it'll last longer on a CPAP, but probably won't last a whole night.

All medical equipment should use pure sine wave power. if you need a good UPS battery. the portable outlet battery is what you need. go to portableoutlet.com

if you think my post was spam. I want you to study how electrical equipment works. all circuit boards in medical equipment run better and cooler with pure sine wave. all motors with oxygen, and c-pap need pure sine to run. if you try to run them on modified, your equipment won't last. they burn out from excessive heat. listen to any motor that runs on modified. it hums and runs hotter. look at lights. they flicker. all computers need pure sine wave to run the right way. all medical equipment needs pure sine. if you don't believe me. look in your owners manual. if you want to run modified. its ok with me. I care less what you do. I'm going to tell them the right way. look for pure sine.

This is an odd post. Circuit boards run on direct current, not alternating current. Their power graph is a straight line, not a wave (pure sine or stepped sine).

Motors on the other hand run on alternating current.

CPAPs get their direct current from a transformer/rectifier (the power supply brick) which takes AC as an input and outputs DC. The question really is whether a given power supply needs pure sine or not. It appears this one does not.

I have a fancy power supply in my home built computer which requires pure sine. I've read comments from others who tried to use it with stepped sine, and the power supply made loud noises and otherwise indicated very quickly that something was wrong. That is why I have a pure sine UPS for my computer. It's not required for all computer power supplies.
