How to determine Good Sleep?
Hey Folks!
Thanks so much to everyone who has helped so far. I am on Day 18 of my therapy. My AHI is under 2 every night. I now understand that while my AHI is good, that doesn't mean my sleep quality is good. So I really don't know what else to do, if anything. Of the 18 days I have had, maybe 3-4 days, I felt good to great. However, that was during the first week. Since I have felt quite awful. Even after watching the videos, I cannot tell a good night of sleep from a bad night. Am I looking at the flow rate, or somewhere else? How do I tell if the lines mean good or bad?
For instance, I feel bad today. This was last night. I only remember being awake consciously 3 times:
BAD NEXT DAY: https://sleephq.com/public/ffcf73a0-ed7 ... b473cc68dd
Here are a few examples of the nights before good days:
GOOD NEXT DAY: https://sleephq.com/public/1f151ddc-308 ... c3d9cdc398
GOOD NEXT DAY: https://sleephq.com/public/bf7f7d94-a27 ... 484165416c
GOOD NEXT DAY: https://sleephq.com/public/e93fb378-844 ... 2ddd2badfd
What if any difference is there, in those reports?
Only things I can think to try going forward:
1. Switch to fixed pressure
2. Change nothing and hope I start sleeping deeper and get used to the mask
3. Other.
4. Sleep in a different room than my wife and dogs?

Hiya Billy,
I have no clue how to read these things yet but I have to say, I like the format of this particular charting. First off it doesnt require a lot of zooming in to small picture. Very easy to read.
Not sure where you found it but it looks like the wave of the future here.
Knowing nothing about anything, the last three look far more complicated than the first one so it kinda surprises me that those were the better nights sleeps.

The one thing I really like about using sleephq is the interactive ability to zoom in on the flow rate and look to see when someone was asleep and when they weren't.
Takes a lot of time and experience and if someone is wondering WTH I am talking about...go here and watch these videos
http://freecpapadvice.com/sleepyhead-free-software
Then go to the links above and play with the flow rate and see if you guys can spot a potential problem on the bad night/bad day report.
That's the only hint I am going to give. There is something to see though and it's significant.

Could someone post what a good nights flow rate looks like. Like a full night?

Only thing I noticed:
All the events I looked at looked like SWJ?
Kind of tricky to figure out how to finagle the zoom/scroll for me.
First time I ever even looked the Sleep HQ thing. I will stick with Oscar.

SWJ? I’m new! What does that mean?

Re: How to determine Good Sleep?
SWJ....Sleep/Wake/Junk ...false positive flagging.
Now go look for more episodes of SWJ breathing without the flagging of any events....just look for irregular breathing and seen how much you see.
Hint...some are subtle but some are so obvious a blind man could see them.
Yep. Pretty much 98% of any flagged events are SWJ.

Re: How to determine Good Sleep?
Bill - You asked what SWJ means? I'm sure Pugsy has a better definition, but TO ME it means when you are neither completely asleep nor completely awake, but in the grey area in between.
BTW, I believe the experts would prefer all your issues going in the SAME post so they can see your history without wasting time hunting through multiple threads.

Actually do to the size of his other thread (it's a massive read and hard to follow) and it's a more catch all thing and this is much more specific....I think in this situation it is best for everyone if it is separate.
I bet there are a lot of people not following his other thread who might see themselves in this one.
It's a good chance for some more specific education.
The only hard fast rule about anything here is....
There are no hard fast rules..

Re: How to determine Good Sleep?
SWJ or sleep/wake/junk is a slang term coined by a sleep tech who used to be a regular here and now just stops in every now and then.
It is not so much the gray/half asleep time but more just something to call the ragged breathing and subsequent flagged events that can happen when we aren't sleep but the machine goes ahead and flags the irregular breathing while awake or during an arousal (we may or may not remember the arousal/awakening) and it can alarm people when there is a lot of it.
But you have to be asleep before any flagged event matters in terms of sleep apnea treatment.
It's not called awake apnea after all.
When we see a lot of SWJ flagged stuff we have to discount those events since we weren't asleep.
They don't matter except for the fact when we see a lot of it that it means the person has crappy sleep quality in general.
As to why the sleep is crappy we don't always know.
My own personal use of the SWJ term includes obvious evidence of arousal breathing with or without associated flagged events.
This below is all SWJ. I was wide awake and not able to sleep. There was no gray half awake/asleep time involved at all.
This one...no flagged events

This one...a truckload of flagged events but I was NOT anywhere close to being asleep.

I skipped a dose of mirtazpine last night, used melatonin, and used fixed pressure. I felt half asleep all night. I went to actual sleep around 11PM.
