I have mild UARS (Upper Airway Respiratory Syndrome) which is different from sleep apnea. I use a Resmed Aircurve 10 Bilevel machine with distilled water and a Philips DreamWisp mask. I have been using this setup for over 6 months now and I still don't get sufficient or refreshing sleep most of the times. I often wake up after 5-6 hours of sleep and still feel tired. Moreover, I also get intermittent "mini headaches" for 2 hours after waking up. I end up feeling sleepy during the day if I don't have a little bit of caffeine. Only on very rare days (once a month maybe?), I can sleep well with my device. I did nothing obviously different on those good days which might have led to better sleep.
Before using the AirCurve 10, I used to sleep the same 5-6 hours and feel a little more tired than now. So, I feel that the machine might have worsened my sleep instead of improving it. I also have GERD, a deviated septum and swollen turbinates which could be contributing to my sleep problem. The GERD is under control and I am trying to figure out how to the nasal issues also. Meanwhile, I am not sure why the machine is not working for my UARS. Has anyone got any tips on how to figure out why my sleep might be still poor and what I can ask my doctor to fix?
PS - The doctor says that it can take up to 1 year to adjust to CPAP, Bilevel etc. which seems too much. I don't know if there are many others who had to wait that long. Honestly, I feel that it might be better for me to just quit. I quit my cpap and went to bilevel. Now, I think I might have to quit that also. There are rare occasions when I have slept well for several days without bilevel. But, those days are probably through sheer luck. Sleep gets bad once those magical days end.
UARS - Headaches and tiredness after using BIPAP
Re: UARS - Headaches and tiredness after using BIPAP
Have you ever had a sleep study done with a Pes device AND your AirCurve 10 machine and mask on so as to determine optimal pressures to deal with your UARS?
Without it...you are just guessing if the pressures you are using are doing a good job or not.
And 5 or 6 hours of sleep simply isn't enough sleep for most people even if they didn't have some sort of sleep disordered breathing. No wonder you don't feel decent....not enough sleep for one thing and you probably have no way to know if your pressures used are doing a good job with treating the UARS.

Not sure if an ASV would be better for you but what you can do to get used to your use it during the daytime. It can get aggravating not being able to sleep while trying to adjust to the machine. WHenever you have free time, whether when reading a book or watching a show try to have the machine with you and on and use it while awake. It has made me get used to my ASV much faster.
