In the last two weeks, OSCAR has detected three nights where I had Cheyne Stokes Respiration (CSR) events...
Should I be concerned? I am sure the answer is going to be "it depends"... Not sure if this helps, but here are the details of the three days:
- June 28 - 17.6%
- July 9 - 10.08%
- July 18 - 5.50%
Sorry if the is too much of a noob question... I have to say that this forum community really is helping to educate me on all things CPAP and sleep related! Thanks all...
Should I Care about CSR Events?
Re: Should I Care about CSR Events?
I depends on
1...what the CSR flagged segments look like when you zoom in
2...if the CSR flagged segments is crammed full of central apneas (ClearAirway on the OSCAR reports) or not.
The machine is actually flagging periodic breathing which by definition is a waxing and waning of the flow rate/breathing that lasts at least 2 minutes. CSR or Cheyne Stokes Respiration is one of several forms of periodic breathing that has the potential to point to some significant health issues. So the machine reports the periodic breathing just so as to alert people to the fact that something might need to be investigated in more detail. It doesn't always mean something bad is going on...it's more like an early warning system to alert to the "maybe" something needs further investigation.
If your CSR is chocked full of central apneas then we sit up and take notice.
There is also a specific pattern that we look for.
Page 8 of the manual explains it to some extent.

Thanks @pugsy
I will monitor this, and if this happens more regularly, I will likely upload some of the visual charts to the the help of you and the rest of this community...
Thanks again!

Re: Should I Care about CSR Events?
Additional information...the machine can sometimes flag awake irregular breathing as some sort of CSR flagged breathing.
It's fairly common to see with patients brand new to cpap therapy and they aren't sleeping so great yet.
I don't have an awake breathing CSR flagged time frame to show you. I have seen it on other people's reports but didn't save one.
To give you a visual perspective.
This is plain old waxing and waning that has been flagged...means nothing. Ignore for sure. It's mine from a long time ago and means nothing. I was asleep and I would see this on occasion but never with any sort of events flagged with it and far from looking like the pattern we associate with real CSR.

And this one is pointing to a serious health issue which wasn't a surprise once we got some history from this person.
He was indeed suffering from a serious case of heart failure. It wasn't a surprise to him or his doctor.
