A brand new Dreamstation 2. What to do with it?

Post by stanst » Sun Jun 12, 2022 12:56 am

After I found out about the Resperonics recall I eventually just stopped using my Dreamstation. I had 6 months to go before the 5 years was up and I could get another through my insurance. I spoke to my sleep doctor, but they couldn't tell me anything. When I visited my Sleep Doc he told me I couldn't get a replacement for the recalled unit until the 5 years was up, which meant for another 6 months . He also pushed me to get the Bongo EPAP device.

As it is, I went without CPAP at all for 6 or 8 weeks(?), and then called my sleep doc. They told me my 5 years was up a couple of months ago (which it wasn't), that I qualify for a new machine and they will order one for me. A couple of days later I got a call from the DME the doc uses, and told them I'd prefer an AirSense10 Autoset. They told me they'll send what they have available, and some days later I got the AirSense I asked for.

I figured it out, set it up and it's all good.

Then several months later I got a package from Resperonics, A brand new Dreamstation 2.
🡺 I don't know what to do with it. 🡸
I think that if I plug it in it will phone home and set up it's parameters for me. Is this a thing? Will it do that? I'd like to give it to my brother - who lives in Georgia, and the closest sleep doc he can get to to is over 200 miles away in a neighboring state - so he's making do with a ResMed ??? that should have been replaced more than a year ago.

When I first got the AirSense, it set up my parameters, and my doc knew I'd been using it.

How do you pass one of these things on to someone else?

I have a similar experience. I stopped using my Dreamstation 1 when the recall started and waited for a replacement. After 6 months I was at the doctor for shortness of breath and having falling episodes. Luckily my unit was about 6 y/o. After trying to find a DME with a machine in stock I had the doctor send my Rx to a local DME knowing I would have to wait a month or two. They called the next day and I picked up a ResMed AirSense 11 this week. I'm still waiting for a replacement from Phillips Respironics. I suppose I'll keep it as a backup.

The doctor's orders for a new machine would include the settings. The doctor can monitor usage remotely via the modem. Phillips claims on the recall website they will work with the DME to get the settings and if they can't do that they will work with the patient. So your new Dreamstation 2 "may" have your settings already. Your insurance may need reports to ensure compliance/usage but that would be for the ResMed AirSense. My insurance does not. You own the Phillips and I would say you are free to do what you want with it. Did they ask you to return the recalled DreamStation? Hold onto it for now if they haven't just in case.

Have you gone into the clinician settings on either machine? If not, read the manuals or find a youtube video to learn how. It's very easy. You can probably turn off the modem on the Dreamstation 2 so it won't send any reports through the modem. Then the settings can be changed to your brothers settings and he can use it.
