Off CPAP before home sleep study???
Off CPAP before home sleep study???
New sleep doctor advised to stop using machine 1-2 weeks prior to home sleep study. Have been a compliant CPAP user for about 14 years, and have had a few follow up sleep studies: I have never once heard this before. The logic allegedly is that by allowing the inflammation that comes with apnea to increase, the study will measure the truest representation of my apnea. It’s very difficult though. I’m not sure the doctor can appreciate this. Feel like a have a cold - first such feeling in 2 years
Re: Off CPAP before home sleep study???
I have heard of this but I always saw just a 4 or 5 nights to be off cpap and not 2 weeks.
It may or may not affect things but you don't want to go through all the crap for the sleep study and have a false negative because you used the cpap right up to the point of having the sleep study done.
I have heard of this for years and not long ago someone here posted a link to a study that was done that reaffirmed the idea that one should be off cpap for a few days.
I didn't save the link to the study...sorry....maybe the person who posted it will stop by and add it again.

Re: Off CPAP before home sleep study???
My take….a sleep study is intended to be representative of the patient’s respiratory performance without therapy.
Key word: Representative
Temporary inflammation or not, is an observation period of 4 to 6 hours in a strange environment reasonable to be considered as representative?
Most of us realize that our respiratory performance varies from day to day while under consistsnt therapy conditions. It makes sense that respiratory performance is likely to vary day to day while not under therapy.

Re: Off CPAP before home sleep study???
The objective of a home sleep study is to confirm you have sleep apnea. It doesn't matter whether the study shows a mild/moderate/severe case. It just needs to qualify you for treatment. Sleep studies are for people. People aren't for sleep studies.
I would refuse to go without CPAP for even one night.
Why are you having multiple studies? Obstructive sleep apnea rarely goes away. I would refuse a study.
Re: Off CPAP before home sleep study???
Thanks so much for these replies. Ultimately it was 6 nights without the machine and I actually now have a cold, the first one since before covid.
You’re right I shouldn’t have gotten a study.
I agreed to it thinking it could lead to improved
treatment depending on my numbers but that was misguided especially since AutoPAP ensures that treatment will be effective no matter the severity of apnea.
Since this group was so helpful and generous with replies I figured I’d direct you to an old post re masks to see if you have any input. I’m still buying out of production equipment on eBay and always looking for any new alternatives out there. Many thanks!

Was it a study or a titration? I tend to think the way you felt after ceasing the cpap use would be enuff to prove that OSA didn't magically disappear.
You confirm my feelings that I have had fewer colds since using cpap.
