How many inches to raise bed
Hi guys,
I want to buy bed risers but I can only buy an amount that add up to 6" or 8" in height. I already have a wedge pillow that is 7" and comfortable as far as depth (but I slide down on it).
I want to raise the bed as I have reflux and want to see if it also helps with UARS. I know 6" is fine for reflux but probably I'd have better luck with 8" for UARS. Do you think 8" would be comfortable?
I cannot use books/bricks to stack to the right height as my bed is on wheels.
Thanks.

Re: How many inches to raise bed
Get dimensional lumber, (2x4s or 4x4s), and remove the casters.
They are removable.
They are removable.

just make sure you don't raise it so high that you need to use a springboard to get in bed.

One way to deal with the sliding. Aka poor man's adjustable bed.musicfreak wrote: ↑Wed Apr 13, 2022 9:33 pmI already have a wedge pillow that is 7" and comfortable as far as depth (but I slide down on it).
1. Take a bed sheet and fold over one end to form a pocket
2. Sewing ensues
3. Insert pillows into the pocket
4. Place the contraption on the bed and adjust so the pillows is between the knee and the buttocks
5. Tuck the other end under the mattress so the weight provides the anchoring
6. Sleep
7. Profit
Re: How many inches to raise bed
I'm not sure that elevating the head of the bed does anything except make you slide down (though Grumpy's suggestion might help). IF I fall asleep without CPAP, I can be sitting straight up, I will have apnea and reflux within seconds of falling asleep.
The bottom line for me has been that both the apnea and the reflux need to be treated. Reflux is not caused by "too much acid", and especially not acid you eat or a lack of "alkaline water". It's acid in the wrong place. I follow the Fast Tract Diet for Acid Reflux and GERD and it has helped enormously. https://www.amazon.com/Heartburn-Digest ... B007WZHCWK

Re: How many inches to raise bed
@Zonker
@GrumpyHere Thanks for your suggestion.
@JanKnitz Apparently Incline Bed Therapy can help sleep apnea. I'm in a FB group and have read posts of a few people who say they don't have it anymore. Someone commented a doctor said even if they feel better they could still have it and be damaging their heart/brain so they should really do a sleep study inclined to be sure. A couple people said they had and it confirmed they didn't have it anymore. I would think these are rare cases and were probably mild apnea.
I have UARS so just wanted to try it. I've been inclined for 2-3 weeks and haven't noticed anything, not even GERD (probably because it hasn't affected UARS). Will give it a couple weeks and then go back to a flat bed.

let us know how it goes, won't you?musicfreak wrote: ↑Sat Jun 04, 2022 5:50 pmWill give it a couple weeks and then go back to a flat bed.
i've recently decided to incline my bed as well. i'm hoping that by laying on my back(though i'm primarily a side sleeper) that i can bust up some of my obstructive clusters that have been plaguing me recently. i'll see how it goes.
good luck!

Re: How many inches to raise bed
No, thank you.
My cpap lets me sleep in whatever position is least painful.
Right now, my spinal stenosis acts up in almost every position imaginable.
Just waiting for a call from yet another doctor--apparently, my pain only bothers me.
Hard to know how loudly I can complain before alienating the doctor.
An inclined bed would only make more pain.

Wel·ler·ism | \ ˈwe-lə-ˌri-zəm
\
Definition of Wellerism from Merriam Webster
: an expression of comparison comprising a usually well-known quotation followed by a facetious sequel (such as "'every one to his own taste,' said the old woman as she kissed the cow")
Did you know?
Sam Weller, Mr. Pickwick's good-natured servant in Charles Dickens' The Pickwick Papers, and his father were fond of following well-known sayings or phrases with humorous or punning conclusions. For example, in one incident in the book, Sam quips, "What the devil do you want with me, as the man said, w[h]en he see the ghost?" Neither Charles Dickens nor Sam Weller invented that type of word play, but Weller's tendency to use such witticisms had provoked people to start calling them "Wellerisms" by 1839, soon after the publication of the novel.

Re: How many inches to raise bed
@Zonker I'll let you know but I have a feeling I won't notice anything.
@Chunkyfrog Actually there have been people that have had relief of their spinal issues. I'm not sure it would help stenosis though. That sounds pretty painful.
They say it helps these issues of the spine:
Spinal Cord Injury
A spinal cord injury (SCI) is damage to the spinal cord that results in a loss of function, such as mobility and/or feeling. Frequent causes of spinal cord injuries are trauma (car accident, gunshot, falls, etc.) or disease (polio, spina bifida, Friedreich's ataxia, etc.).
Spine / Back ache
Back pain often happens because something is off in the way your spinal joints, muscles, discs, and nerves fit together and move. ... Herniated discs can cause pain in your lower back or hip because the nerves there are pressed.

How many find relief? Who knows.
