Defective cpap ?

Post by antodeb » Wed Apr 06, 2022 6:51 am

Hello everyone !

After years of dealing with constant fatigue and anxiety, I did an at home polygraphy, which came back negative for sleep apnea. I was quite shocked. After doing some research on the internet, I found out about UARS. I talked about it to my father, who's an ent specialist, and he agreed that there is a strong possibility that i have UARS. Not wanting to wait 6 months or more to do an in-lab polysomnography, I made the hasty decision to buy a refurbished cpap, a Resmed auto sense 10 for her.
I've also downloaded Oscar, and thanks to it I've discovered that my machine seems to be behaving oddly. The machine stops sending air after ramp time, which i've set at 45min, therefore I get woken up. There are gaps in the red line (inhaled air) during ramp time on the oscar data. Or sometimes there's no red line at all. The machine doesn't seem to react when i'm having events. I'm constantly waking up after around 1 hour after putting the machine on. The machine is still on when i'm waking up, but i can barely feel any air, even though on the machine it's saying that the air pressure is at 9, or some other number.
I've turned off smart start, i've changed plugs, and there's nothing wrong with the adapter. Is my machine defective ?
Thanks !!!

Your system is set to automatically vary the pressure between a minimum of 4cm to a maximum of 20. I'm no chart expert, but your machine is at the minimum pressure setting of 4 most of the time, which doesn't move enough air for normal people to breathe. Try upping the minimum to something like 7 and see if you notice a difference.

Ramp doesn't even matter. The machine can't ramp up to 4, since that's the lowest pressure it can provide.

Agree with loggerhead. Raise the minimum to 7, set EPR to full time, and turn off ramp. It will feel a bit strange at first but you’ll get used to it in short order.

There are no events...there is no reason for the machine to increase the pressure. With a minimum of 4, ramp doesn't work. With ramp on and a minimum of 4, the machine starts at 4 and it takes 45 minutes to get up to the minimum of 4.

Also when in ramp the machine doesn't/can't flag or sense any sort of apnea event that might be happening.
So with the starting minimum pressure of 4 and ramp for 45 minutes that then starts at 4....waste of ramp plus potentially missing something that could be important.

The machine blowing lower pressure after being turned off is the normal cool down period used to dry out the hose.
It will quit after about 30 minutes. This is normal for the machine to do this.

I have no idea if your machine is defective based on those reports you shared. Don't know which is the machine turning itself off for some reason or if the turning off was of your doing.

Turn the ramp off and see what happens.

Also, there's no red line in many places because the machine can't drop the pressure. (The red line shows the pressure you're dropping to via EPR.)
