Need Advice, Please CPAP machine with smaller footprint

Post by G00k » Wed Mar 02, 2022 4:16 pm

Hi there boys and girls, long time no write.

I joined the forum in early 2006, and am on my 2nd cpap machine. (The first got too noisy.)

I've been using a Resmed S9 with humidifier for probably the last 6-7 years, and I'm pretty happy with it. Nowadays after retirement, I've been traveling around a lot, and carrying my trusty S9 everywhere. But I've been asked by my wife if there might be a machine that I can get that takes up less room on a bedside table. Being the dutiful husband that I am, I said I'd look into it.

I'm about to go onto CPAP.com to begin my search, but since I began my journey reading your opinions and hints, I figured I'd see if y'all had recommendations that would shorten my search. Just for reference, my S9 is about 11"w x 6"d x 3"h. (with humidifier)

REVISION: The footprint consideration could be solved somewhat if the hose connection was anywhere other than in the back of the unit. It pokes straight out the back adding a couple of inches to the depth (good catch, Mrs G00k!).

I'd appreciate your input.

Thanks,

The Resmed Airsense 10 range use a swivel-mount on the heated hose which does save some space. I think the AS11 went back to the "sticking straight out" style.

Or you could look at the Fisher & Paykel Sleepstyle which has a more upright form factor but a smaller base.

On my Airsense 10, the power cord sticks out from the rear even more than the air hose.
It's like a brilliant design stopped at the case, and then went to hell.
Then the cable has the bulky EM bulge so close it catches on the edge of the shelf.
Well, I know how: "That's not MY job . . . "

Well thank you chunkyfrog and Respirator99 for your responses, and pardon me for being so slow getting back to y'all. I'm getting old and forgetful, and missed notifications that there were responses, and the email address I used needs updating.

I'm still using the trusty S9, but recently it has given me a message that my motor has exceeded its useful life, and I should speak to the service tech about repair/replace. Good luck with that - out of production. Now I need another plan. I can replace the motor. There are many refurb'ed units available, or get a Chinese made motor supposedly built to identical specs. I am considering the inspire sleep apnea solution. (google "Inspire sleep apnea") Imagine: no more CPAP machines.

If I do it, I'll post the results. Probably in the fall 2023.

Thanks again

S9's tend to last a long time, my last one to fail had 19500 hours on the blower before it stopped working, so you could probably ignore the message unless you have more than 20000 hours.

Maybe a bigger bedside table!

We got larger bedside cabinets after our last move. The problem at the time was my wife's hearing made even normal breathing sound like Darth Vader. I bought an 8 foot tube and moved it to the bottom of the cabinet and blocked the front with extra pillows. Unfortunately, she got the original Covid, which really did a number on her, including some loss of hearing (among other things). So I don't know if I need to do all of that anymore.

The remaining problem was more logistical in that getting a smaller new unit would help in travel situations where I haven't control of furniture. Or extra pillows.
