Air leak question

Post by OldLady44 » Tue Mar 01, 2022 12:16 pm

I’ve had a Resmed AirSense 10 for about 5 years (on CPAP for about 24 years). It recently gave up the ghost and I got a new one. I feel fine after a night’s sleep - same as usual but on my new machine the air leaks are running from about 40 lpm to 80 lpm nightly. I don’t hear any noise, my mouth isn’t dry (I use a chin strap) and have tried two different nasal pillows masks. I replaced my hose, replaced nasal pillows, fiddled with pressure and a few other setting. Per is off, ramp is off and I’ve tried both a range and single pressure. No change.
I called CPAP.com (where I have purchased all my machines for many years). They say it will take up to 8 weeks to have the unit evaluated. I’m not happy about going back to my Resmed 9.
Any suggestions for other things to try?
Many thanks!

Have you swapped out long hoses???
I recently was seeing higher than usual and fairly constant leaks on my reports and despite not being able to feel a leak....there was one in the hose. I found it with the water test. I was swearing that hose didn't have a hole in it but it did.

If you haven't tried a new hose...try a new hose.

If you have tried a new hose...then check all your mask connections.

Can you post an image of your detailed OSCAR report showing the leak graph....see if the leaks are constant or intermittently high????

Yes, I swapped out long hose.

I really am an old lady and although computer literate (former systems programmer) it will take me awhile to set up and see if I have everything I need to run Oscar. Sounds like worthwhile to do in any case! Thanks!

What mask do you use? How old is it?

What you can do is what I call an awake experiment. Use the machine while awake and able to test all areas for leak.
Use about 30 minutes. Awake...reading or watching TV.
Then once you have OSCAR up and running you can import that file and look to see if the 30 minutes is showing a leak or not.
It will help isolate what the leak might be caused by and then you can develop a plan.

I seriously doubt if there is something wrong with the machine itself.

Ok, will do.

I’m wondering if there could be a bad sensor. Seems odd to me that there can be air leaks of that size suddenly appearing after changing machines. I changed mask headgear (both- and different types) along with anything else.I can’t think of anything else to swap out.

Humidifier in new machine seems a tad bit loose … but no noise. Wouldn’t a big air leak have associated noise?

Not necessarily a huge amount of noise and it for sure would cause a sustained large leak.

This is why I wanted to see if the leak was constant or intermittent.
If it is constant it very well could be equipment related...if it isn't the hose...it could be the plastic water chamber isn't quite solidly inserted. I have had that happen...myself and there wasn't a massive noise involved.

So for sure something to check....and the detailed graphs would be a big help.

Do you have a SD card inserted already in the slot on the AirSense 10?
If not...you will need one to see the details using OSCAR.

Yes, have SD card in. I’ve carefully pushed on humidifier and it isn’t going to get seated any better than it is now.

I don’t have much energy because of heart failure but will work on getting the data into OSCAR as I feel up to it.

Thanks for the suggestions.
