I responded to the 5AHI thread. I backed up what I said with a reference to a research study, done by medical professionals.
Well, not really. Your "medical professionals" stated
Given the high pleural pressure swings occurring in these periods, it is conceivable that a hemodynamic workload is produced along with brief disruptions in cortical activity that could contribute to some clinical symptoms.
and although they reported all kinds of flow and hemodynamic data, failed to report out Arousal Index!

Seems to me they were just looking at a bunch of RERAs.

Without reporting RDI, that study is incomplete.

Thank you for your thoughtful comments.

Reiterating my concern: Posters here that deride or dismiss the sleep specialty professionals universally of "uncaring" of the plight of patients, should be challenged as to their authority or credentials to render such universal derision.

Posters, who relate their own experiences, and express their opinion of their own patient care are not the focus of this thread.

No doubt that the science of sleep disorders (and appropriate treatments) is constantly evolving as medical professionals do their research. Those professionals and care-givers ought to be encouraged rather than disparaged.

I was filling out a medical history recently, and I was astonished by the amount of medical care I have consumed over the course of the last 68 years, especially considering that I feel pretty healthy. ... patients are the experts in being patients...
PST, thank you for your very thoughtful contribution. I was reading your list of medicos to She Who Must Be Obeyed - she thought I was talking about myself. :)

In this day and age it seems that everybody and anybody on the internet can declare themselves as an expert on any topic .

To that point if a participant wants to project themselves as knowledgeable, and expect to be taken seriously, they ought to be able to provide some basis to claim that they have SOME qualification.

But,for example, Pugsey often offers advice, and although the readers may not "know" her background they can tell by the way she expresses herself with "IMO" or her nuanced answers allowing that people and their "conditions" don't always fall into neat little boxes. She makes her point, but adds "your mileage may vary" -- because it always does. She willingly acknowledges that occasionally some nights can be "crappy" for no obvious reason. The other thing I've noticed Pugsey doing is suggesting to people that they should talk with their medical professionals, or in extreme cases perhaps seek other professional care. In my opinion, Pugsey earns her reputation and credibility by the way she responds, even if she doesn't share her qualifications.

On the other hand, some participants here are brusk, arrogant, prone to stereotyping, and sometimes belligerent. It is these contributors that (IMO) the original poster was referring to.

Oh, in my many years on this planet, I've had my share of brusk doctors (mostly surgeons), but everyone of them was highly qualified. But none of the, what I consider truly professionals, ever said that other doctors "didn't care about my well-being".

Most, if not all, do care--but some are bound by constricts that delay or deny therapy.
We should be condemning the "system," then?

Here's my opinion (for what it's worth or not) when people are making generalizations about inadequacies in health care and the "qualifications" of those people making those same negative "generalizations".

I don't really need to know (or want to know) the qualifications of anyone stating "they don't care" or "they suck" or whatever.
It's quite obvious that it is nothing more than opinion based on something...possibly personal experience or family member experience or hell...even overall outlook on life in general.
I don't need someone to explain to me or verify that they have a good reason for thinking the way they do or expressing that viewpoint. Whatever the reason...it's the way they feel and their opinion and they have a right to say it or express it without explaining the actual "why". Doesn't matter how much of a presence they might have on this forum to establish any sort of reputation.

It's pretty obvious that it is an opinion even if not quantified by stating it is an opinion. I already know what to do with opinions of any kind...good or bad. I take them all with a grain of salt and move on. If someone can't understand that then they have no business on the internet because that's really all the internet is....a bunch of opinions.

And finally....since apparently the "qualification" thing was really pertaining to people who post negative generalities about the medical system and not about those offering advice.....this whole thread IMHO is a total waste of time and energy.
We are all adults and should be able to figure it out with just a little common sense.
Unfortunately common sense isn't always in abundant supply.

And with that...I am done here. I got more important things to do than worry about so and so telling people that the doctors don't care or they are all crooks or idiots or whatever.... or what constitutes any sort of qualified reason for their statement. It's their opinion and everyone has a right to their own opinion no matter how ridiculous (or not) that opinion might really be.

Challenge them? No, all but the extremely naive know to ignore them. (Pugsy just said this in a few more words. :D )

Actually the person who is deriding the sleep speciality professionals is also offering advice. Were it just a random contributor, who was not offering advice, I'd agree that they should "just be ignored".

But when the advice is coupled with an implied 'I know better than these professionals' so heed my advice instead of your doctors, that is a problem.
Example: "General statements {from Resmed} about cpap therapy, and machines, are usually wrong.

I honestly believe that newbies come to this forum seeking INFORMED opinions and observations. While I've not had that conversation with Mr. Goodman, I suspect that his intent is to sponsor a forum that informs and is helpful particularly to new cpap users.

Consider the newbies that have driven away recently , or have given up of this board, because of personal attacks, belittling remarks, rude and sarcastic remarks.

"As ******, another forum member often suggests, this forum is sort of a zoo. Some of us are cordial. Others are not."

" ask a simple question and get smashed by 100 aggressive “Experts”."

I can go on and on with quotes from past threads..... but I think you get the theme.

This is the internet, after all.
EVERYTHING you read can only be guaranteed to be somebody's
OPINION.
If you agree, that does not make it right; nor does it make it wrong if you disagree.
Our opinions all have equal weight--to somebody.
