Sleep Apnea and BPH

Post by Jeffj318 » Fri Feb 04, 2022 3:48 pm

My urologist said for me to get a sleep apnea test since I am waking up a lot at night to urinate. I am a senior. :D It could be the prostate (not enlarged) but blocking to some extent. He guessed perhaps a 10% chance for sleep apnea. He can only guess, however, I have read some articles that this might be true. If you want to joke after reading this next statement go right ahead. He prescribed Cialis (5mg daily) as that has been found to treat BPH. I don't have many symptoms of sleep apnea. My wife says once in a while she can hear some light snoring and that is all. I do not fall asleep during the daytime, do not gasp for breath, and do other things that go along with sleep apnea. What say you?
(P.S. I usually post about my wife so anything about equipment does not apply to me.)

My wife is the CPAP user.

While sleep apnea can cause nocturia in some people it isn't the only cause for nocturia and with the guys...there's always the BPH cause for nocturia.

My husband is 72...has the nocturia thing as well and it also seems to an awake during the day factor as well. Some days he just has to go pee more.
I have watched him sleep and I have looked hard for some sort of sign of apnea and I just can't ever spot any signs.
An occasional very mild snore maybe and that's the extent of it. He has no other signs of sleep apnea either.

If you were my husband I would tell you to take the meds and see if that helps or not and if it doesn't then I would push for the sleep study.

FWIW...I did have significant nocturia as a symptom...which fortunately was the first symptom to go totally away with beginning cpap. So my nocturia was definitely caused by the sleep apnea and it's fairly common.
But for the guys and especially the guys of the age where the BPH thing can happen...they always have that possibility as well even those without apnea being a factor.
