It would be really helpful to know why you were prescribed an ASV machine? Do you know? If not, could you find out? If you live in the US, you have a right to receive a copy of your sleep study if you request one.
I travel with my machine, taking it on board with me. It goes in the bin or under the seat; if I think the available options might damage it, I ask the flight attendant to find a good spot for it. It's medical equipment, so it doesn't count as a piece of carry-on luggage. Flight attendants are very used to helping with PAP machines. Still, I understand your concern about the high price-tag for replacement.

Re: travel / backup machine suggestions
I had a Resmed Auto M series machine as a backup I took all over the world. Great compact machine. Wish I had kept it.

pswartz ,
I doubt there is a travel model with the features needed in an ASV. So as mentioned try whatever you decide on at home before you travel.

Re: travel / backup machine suggestions
Thanks to @GrumpyHere, they let me know that a "ResMed S9 VPAP Adapt with ASV" model 36037 was equivalent to the AirCurve 10 ASV, just older. I was able to get one yesterday for $200 (with 10,000 hours). From what I can tell, that is a really good price.
The main unit was in great shape, the H5i was pretty dirty. I typically don't use humidification, so not a big deal. I may try to get new-ish H5i at some point.
All cleaned and I used it last night. Worked well - and reported a AHI of 0.25. Graphs and stats in Oscar looked similar to an AirCurve night. I feel about the same, rest-wise.
It was a little louder than the AirCurve, but certainly not as loud as the 960P. Thanks for pointing me in this direct.

Re: travel / backup machine suggestions
The model 36037 older big brother to the AirCurve 10 ASV is certainly a good solution to your desire for an alternative machine for travel or as a backup.
It is essentially the same machine but without maybe a couple of bells and whistles of the little brother newer model machine.
Should you ever decide you can't clean up the humidifier to suit you and you do want to use a humidifier you might check out secondwindcpap.com.
