Still having issues with dry mouth!!

Post by JackRyan53 » Thu Dec 30, 2021 10:59 am

Been on CPAP since the late 90's!! I have a Resmed 10 with an F20 Full Face Mask.
Have to wake up to get a drink several times a night with dry mouth. My machine shows no leaks so the mask is not the problem. I used every mouth spray/wash in the book that doesn't even touch it.
I do mouth breathe inside my mask. Have humidity and hose temp up to the max.
Not taking any meds except lisonopril for BP.

Anyone have any ideas other than usual ones I read about all the time? I don't think its reflux. Pepcid takes care of it but it can also cause dry mouth.

Happy 2002 to All!

mouth spray/wash
Wrong products. As you probably learned, they only provide 60 seconds of relief.

I use GC Dry Mouth Gel. It's the thickest gel of this type that I have found. There is a bit of a learning process to apply it and make it last.

Another possibility, assuming you can breathe well through the nose, is to tape the mouth closed. This can be done with a nasal mask or under your FFM.

Any chance you could lower the hose temp?

@ Juie - I don't mean to argue but am curious. Why would lowering the hose temp help? Thanks in advance for the education

I would think it would dry things out more, no?

Hasn't been the case for me and in fact since warmer air can hold onto more water than cooler air I think it would actually help a bit with adding a bit of moisture.
I use cooler air temps in the hose in the summer but I have to use much warmer temps in the winter to prevent condensation so I might use 72 degrees in the summer but I need the full 86 degrees when my bedroom is much colder and I don't have a an increase in dry mouth at all.

I don't see warmer air actually causing dry mouth to worsen. I think we have to look at the root cause of the dry mouth more....like the mouth breathing or medication side effects or just drawing the short straw and being unlucky enough to just get a dry mouth easier.
Always worth trying I suppose but if we cool off the hose air temp it raises the potential for those other problems to pop up like condensation.

I also recommend Xylimelts. I've been using them for a while now and they really help me. In addition, the type of sugar used in this product helps retard the growth of tooth decaying bacteria in the mouth. Win/win.
