New Dreamstation 2 chemical smell?
New Dreamstation 2 chemical smell?
Hello I've just set up my Dreamstation 2, which was sent to me to replace my recalled Dreamstation. All is well except for a strong chemical smell when I get inhalations going. I only tested it for a couple of minutes and it felt like it irritated my lungs. I'm otherwise happy with the machine, as it's more compact and very very quiet. Is anyone else seeing this problem? Or maybe someone has an outgassing routine that would help? I am eager to use this but don't want to be damaging my lungs in the process.

First of all, does it smell like "new car smell?" If so, it might be just that!
In any case, try running it for a few hours before you use it. That might just blow out the smell. Also, make sure that you put water in reservoir (or that humidification is off or zero).

If brand new out of the box it may have an odor. Mine did and I simply let it air out for a day or two and I continued using my recalled Dream Station for a short while for a couple of days while it was airing. I didn't run it while airing out, but did remove the humidifier tank from the machine and also removed the lid from the tank to let it air.
A couple days ago I had forgotten to add water to the humidifier, it ran dry and had an plastic odor in the early morning hours.

Check the hose, when I received new machine I smelled an unfamiliar odor, upon further investigation I found it was a chemical like smell from the hose, I switched the hose and was fine, just a suggestion as a process of elimination
Re: New Dreamstation 2 chemical smell?
When I purchased my Z1 a few years back, it came with two hoses sealed in plastic. I found the hoses to be unusable due to the odor, and called the manufacturer. They sent me two more hoses sealed in plastic with the same problem. A few days letting them air, and all the odor was gone.

Re: New Dreamstation 2 chemical smell?
I had the DreamStation 1 for 7 months and then it was recalled. I did not know when or what I would get from Phillips so I bought a Resmed Airsense 10. Perfect, no odor, liked it much better than Dreamstation About 4 months ago Philips sent me a new Dreamstation 2. The first thing I noted was the very strong odor of plastic and glue. Do I want that in my lungs? They found that the Dreamstation 1 was off gassing 3 carcinogenic chemicals from day one through the life of the machine. I assumed that the Dreamstation 2 would be made in deep consideration of toxic properties. So I packed it up, put it in my store room and went back to the Resmed Airsense. Yesterday the Resmed stopped working. I tried everything and the vendor has not yet returned my call. After a bad night without the cpap I decided I had to do my best with the new Dreamstation 2. I soaked the water tub in hot water with dishwashing liquid for an hour. Rinsed it out and the smell of plastic improved somewhat but was not gone. That same odor permeats the main unit with motor so I used cpap wipes to try to get rid of it and was not successful. So should I sleep with it tonight knowing toxic fumes are going to go into my lungs all night, or, have another sleepless night without the cpap? I chose the latter and intend to get the Resmed fixed asap. You would think Philips would have made every attempt to ensure that the Dreamstation 2 would be totally hypoallergenic and non toxic in light
of their negligence with the Dreamstation 1. This is just horrible!

No manufacturer makes any attempt to make there machines hypoallergenic, and I doubt your DS 2 is off-gasing toxic fumes. The DS 2 is a crap machine, and Philips is a crap company, but not for the reasons your stating.

Not everything that stinks is toxic.
Think body odor vs cigar smoke.

Re: New Dreamstation 2 chemical smell?
Neoblanche, Take the DS2 out of the box and let it air out for a day or two. Run the machine for a bit with the hose attached. The odor will dissipate. My DS2 did have a slight odor right out of the box, but it quickly went away. It can have a 'plasticy' odor if the humidifier tank uses up the water and the tank heats up, which it's done once when I forgot to top it off the night before. While there are a few things I don't like about the DS2(mostly cosmetic), it does a better job with the therapy than the DS1 did. I never felt the DS1 was much of a health issue unless an ozone sanitizer was used which would destroy the sound foam. Most colored clothing will have a tag that states not to use bleach, but there will be a few that will think that the bleach will clean the clothes better. Is it the maker of the clothes that is fault because the user didn't adhere to the instructions when the clothing is ruined? Don't believe all you read on forums.
