Oscar is FABULOUS tool, but sometimes I think we have to take what it reports with a grain of salt considering the false events that pop up on mine. Knowledge is power. What I really mean is that one has to learn how to interpret it or it does not help in being knowledgeable about your own therapy.
yup. and one has to keep in mind that it's just recording events that happen while you sleep. it means that that one hypopnea or central or whatever happened because your machine wasn't able to respond to that event. but there is SO much more that impacts sleep in addition to apnea.

btw, did you know that oscar will allow you to "edit" the session so that you get rid of those clusters? this happened to me a LOT as a newbie; the transitions that crop up going into or out of sleep. by doing some fancy mouse work, you can highlight the period in between and see what your ahi was without the transitional events.

i believe it was pugsy who showed me that.
I did not know that! Despite being on APAP since 9/15 it has been less than a week that I have been able to pop on my mask, have no leaks and sleep most of the night. There are too many arousals but most are not respiratory related. Bottom line is that I hope, like you, that these CA’s, or most of them, will go away. Thank you for your encouragement. It really helps!!!

If a minimum pressure is set on 5 and the EPR is on 3, I know that this does not work because it won't let the pressure go below 4. But does EPR reduce it to 4 anyway or do nothing. Might as well set it on 1 right?
Correct for the period of time that the pressure is at 5 cm but remember when using auto adjusting pressures that as the machine wants to go higher it can get to a point where there is more than a 1 cm reduction when EPR is set higher than 1.
If EPR is set to 3 and the machine goes to 6 cm for whatever reason then EPR can result in a reduction to 4 cm from the 6 cm...or if the machine wants to go to 8 cm...then EPR of 3 will end up with a drop to 5 cm during exhale.
If you set EPR to 1 cm...and the machine wants to go to 8 cm...then you only get a 1 cm drop during exhale down to 7 cm.
This is how reducing EPR effectively increases the overall average pressure during exhale.
Well of course. I could not see the forest for the trees, lol. What would I do without you!

Sorry about that. I forgot exact age and punted. Remember I am no spring chicken myself.
Happy birthday a little early and because I just imagine I will forget in a week.

Thank you my dear. I was kidding of course. I am thankful to have lived this long and have no more health issues than I have, lol. Many of our friends are struggling with diabetes, severe heart diseaes, cancer. We are blessed.

BTW I had set the EPR on 1 before I asked you about it and forgot to set it back to 3. Whoa, miserable night with tons of OA's and H's, but few CA's if that tells you anything. Learned my lesson for sure. So for now I am 5-11 EPR 3. I am going to leave it like that for a while and see if this "old" body will settle down.Wishing you a pain free or at least a lesser pain day.

Thank you. It's turning colder now and that never bodes well for me when it comes to pain...and when we wake up dreaming that we hurt....well...probably not going to be a good day but as you say....if all I have to bitch about is a little bit of pain then I am actually lucky.

As for the bad night with EPR at 1....doesn't surprise me. I am betting a LOT of arousal related events because of the aerophagia. We already know that your pressure wants to go higher because of the flow limitations and with EPR at 1 it probably went higher and that meant your exhale pressure stayed up there and you probably spent a lot more time at the higher exhale pressure. Prime recipe for the aerophagia monster to come set up shop.

And it certainly did!! At least there is no pain with it. Just an overwhelming urge to burp, lol.
And I feel like I have finally passed from Kindergarten to 1st grade in understanding all of this.

Stay warm and pamper yourself. I don’t know you but I get the “sense” that you take care others but are not so good at pampering yourself.

@ zonker - You mentioned earlier that "oscar will allow you to "edit" the session so that you get rid of those clusters" of transitional apnea so you can see what the AHI was without false evens. I have been unable to figure out how to do this. Can you give some instructions? Thanks.

Advice from you (the mild mannered and the grumpy) and an unbelievable amount of time and effort by Pugsy reviewing my data in minute detail has made a difference. Settling on a minimum pressure of 7, maximum of 11, EPR of 3, no ramp and a mask that fits has given me several nights of solid sleep with NO OA's, a few false CA's, one or two H's, and no large leaks. I have even had periods of 4-6 hours with no events whatsoever. It has been two months to the day that I started this "adventure." A LONG two months, lol.

Thank you all for giving of your time and expertise.

Hugs

Sherry
