Fist Night over, Rest of My Life To Go

Post by NeurosurgeryNP » Sat Mar 12, 2005 7:34 am

Hello all.

I got my CPAP machine yesterday and I used it for the first time last night. With the help of AMbien, I sleep rather well all night WITH the mask (Activa) on the entire night. I also have a H/H.

However, I noticed that my throat is rather sore this morning and that I am a bit congested (I did have congestion the morning after I did my CPAP titration - quite bad all day though - maybe because of no H/H on their machine). Anyone know why this is happening?

Thanks for all of you input. I am so blessed to have found this forum right after my diagnosis and prior to getting my cpap. This has helped to prepare me tremendously for the road ahead.

What did you set your humidifier on ?

It took a few nights to find the right setting for me. I started on 1-2 (Remstar auto w/Cflex) and now have settled on 4. If you start getting rainout with the humidifier set that high, get a Aussie heated hose. Eliminates rainout.

(rainout is when you get condensation inside your mask, and it basically rains on you.)

The H/H I have actually gets set on degrees...I started on 105 F but during the night I upped it to the max - with no rainout. I did not know at that point if it was going to help. I think what may have happened is I had mouth leaks throughout the night and maybe that is why my throat is sore...I don't know. I may try the FF Ultra Mirage I got tonight and see if this helps.

I, too had congestion/sore throat for a couple of nights. But, now my allergies and everything seem much better after just a couple of weeks on the machine. I use the Ultra Mirage FFmask and my H/H on 5 (with no rainout). I have even notices that my lips are much less dry.

Good luck. Keep at it! Great job for your first night!!

Mouth air leaks are a very likely possibility, imho, especially when lack of heated humidification can be ruled out, as is the case with you, Neuro. I'm sure you've got plenty of access to adhesive tape for a little mouth-taping experiment, if you choose to try that.

2ND night over - did AWESOME. This time I tried the Ultra Mirage FF as I had woken up with a sore throat yesterday. Aside from a little soreness of the nose, it went great. No sore throat today. And, no headache. I actually felt like I slept. (I did sleep - 12 hours to be exact). I wish I had this diagnosis a long time ago.

I ordered a chin strap from cpap.com (as well as the aura-you are all happily talking about). I am hoping this can fix the problem of a sore throat. I really liked using the FF, but the nose soreness would preclude me from using it daily.

Thanks to you all for all of your support. You have gotten me through a tough time. You guys are the only ones who understand.

I actually felt like I slept.
And that's what it's all about when pieces of the puzzle start coming together. I hope you have many more mornings like that.
